Baggio 0
http://www.thesun.co.uk/section/0,,3,00.html NEWCASTLE are ready to make a £5.5million swoop for Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton, writes MARTIN BLACKBURN. Toon boss Glenn Roeder has put Liverpool striker Peter Crouch at the top of his January wish-list. But he is also a fan of Barton, 24, and is keen to test the resolve of City boss Stuart Pearce. Barton has a clause in his contract which allows him to talk to any club who make a bid of £5.5m or more. Roeder has plenty of options in central midfield at present with the likes of Scott Parker, Nicky Butt, Kieron Dyer and Turkish star Emre. But there are doubts over the long-term future of ace Emre so Roeder is keeping his options open. The departure of Barton would be a major blow to City as he only signed a new four-year contract at Eastlands in July. And with champions Chelsea showing interest in young England defender Micah Richards, 18, it could be a disastrous start to the year for the Blues. Mark 0
Where the fuck would he fit in? Good player aye, but it doesnt make any sense to sign him. Sell Parker and then sign Barton and I'd be chuffed with that. But Glenda would never sell Parker, he'd rather have another brain tumor.

Gemmill 44112
He's better than what we've got tbh. Ok he might be another centre midfielder but when he's an improvement on what we currently have, I don't see the problem.... .....CAVEAT ALERT.... ....ASSUMING we are also going to strengthen in the key areas. Jimbo 172
If Emre fucks off to Bayern Munich, this would be a good move, in my opinion.

Will score goals though which would take some pressure off Martins.
Scottish Mag 3
From the Mirror - JOEY BARTON is set to join Newcastle in a £5.5million deal - with Emre quitting St James' Park. Toon chairman Freddy Shepherd has been tracking the midfielder (left) for 12 months and is ready to activate an escape clause in his Manchester City contract to take him to Tyneside next month. Barton, 24, had a clause inserted in his contract when he agreed his new deal with City earlier this year that he could leave if a club paid £5.5m for him. And Shepherd is prepared to offer Barton a hefty pay rise to £55,000 a week to sign for the Magpies. Newcastle will part-finance Barton's move by offloading Emre and the Turkish international midfielder is set to move to the continent during the transfer window. Emre cost £3.8m from Inter Milan 18 months ago and Bayern Munich have been tracking him as a possible replacement for Owen Hargreaves. Few on Tyneside will be sad to see Emre go as he has failed to live up to his star billing, managing just 36 league appearances during his time at St James' Park. As revealed exclusively in last week's Mirror, new West Ham boss Alan Curbishley was keen to take Barton to Upton Park. But they have lost out to Newcastle who have also fought off stiff competition from Everton and Tottenham to land the controversial player, who is serving a three-match ban for his sending off at Bolton last Saturday. Blues boss David Moyes was keen to land the Scouser and boyhood Everton fan and although he could find the £5.5m transfer fee, he could not meet his wage demands. City boss Stuart Pearce will be disappointed to lose Barton after the way he stood by him during his troubles at the club during the last 18 months. Sounds like a good deal. £55,000 a week seems a lot, but I suppose that's the going rate these days.
TheInspiration 1
Good signing if Emre goes - he's better than anyone else in centre-midfield imo, but I'm worried about his behaviour. Would be sad to see Emre go too.

Then what ? If this is the case, then the opportunity to sign a better player should not be passed up.
Baggio 0
I dread to think what a midfield pairing of Parker and Barton would be like, 100% effort and 10% creativity. Two proper midfielders as Souness would say.
Baggio 0
Very good player, last thing we need unless Emre does move though. Will score goals though which would take some pressure off Martins. 02-03 Manchester City 1 Goals, 7 Games (-) 03-04 Manchester City 1 Goals, 28 Games 5 Games (UEFA Cup) 04-05 Manchester City 1 Goals, 30 Games (-) 05-06 Manchester City 6 Goals, 31 Games (-) 06-07 Manchester City 5 Goals, 20 Games 14 goals in 121 games which averges a goal nearly every 9 games, also don't forget that Barton took over as Man City's penalty taker from Anelka when he went to Fenerbache in January 2005. What does Emre average? Or Parker? Or Butt? Barton is better than all three.
