zico martin 95 Posted December 24, 2006 Share Posted December 24, 2006 but Ive recently got an X reg mondeo ( classy bloke i know but its a lush motor as far as Im concerned) which was registered in jan 2001. so what year were the Y reg cars made? and didnt the new reg's eg. 01 51 start in 2001 as well. So technically your car is 3 months older in the eyes of the buying public. Y plates will have come out in April 01 with the 51's being released in September. Interest free rates and purchases from abroad (primarily thanks to the internet) meant that the bottom fell out of the second hand car market and more and more people were buying brand new. They way they've got it now means that the current system doesn't need to be changed until March 2051. Wrong - it was because the motor trade likes to have TWO selling seasons a year with new numbers rather than one If the numbering system was 07 - abc- 1234 youd be able to sell 10 million cars a year - Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Wrong - it was because the motor trade likes to have TWO selling seasons a year with new numbers rather than one If the numbering system was 07 - abc- 1234 youd be able to sell 10 million cars a year - Part of the reason, yes but then they'd been wanting that for in excess of 20 years. The driving force was actually the amount of cars that were being sold. The whole thing was expedited in March 1999 so that they could get the new scheme in place in 2001 and make use of the 51 plate. (6 months later than they wanted to of course).
