Scottish Mag 3
Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder has confirmed an interest in Championship duo Giles Barnes and Gareth Bale. Southampton defender Bale has been strongly linked with a host of Premiership clubs after impressive performances for club and country this season. Tottenham and Manchester United are both thought to be keen, but Roeder has gone one step further by confirming an interest. Barnes is also a target of Roeder's, with the Magpies boss full of praise for the Derby midfielder, who has scored five goals already this season. Roeder sees bright futures for both teenagers and is keen to bring the pair to St James' Park when the transfer window reopens next month. "The only two players I am interested in from the Championship are Giles Barnes and Gareth Bale," Roeder said. "They are two outstanding talents and the sort of players we should be looking at - and by admitting our interest, we're are not giving away any secrets because a lot of top clubs fancy them. "Barnes is an offensive midfield player and someone I would call a truly fine modern-day footballer, while it would not surprise me if Gareth Bale went on to play 100 games for Wales." Shearergol 0
We're linked with a £1m bid for Barnes, when both Liverpool and Everton are willing to pay nearer £3m. Where the hell he'd ever actually play is anyones guess, but certainly one for the future. Would love to see us sign Bale though.

Lazarus 0
both these players are hugely rated and i doubt we'll be in with a sniff tbh.
Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
Both would make good signings from the Championship, as would Nugent and the right-back from Colchester, Greg Halford. I don't think Barnes and Bale would come cheap though, they're highly rated and there will be strong competition to sign them.
snakehips 0
Any young, up and coming, left back would need his head examining if he didn't look upon NUFC as a fantastic opportunity. Big Club. Big wages. Big support. Some really good players. But, more importantly, a left back slot that is virtually there for the taking! The prospect of signing and walking straight into the first team as opposed to sitting on a bench for weeks on end must surely be a hell of an incentive?? Baggio 0
We were scouting Barnes at the end of last season so why we didn't sign him then instead of waiting for his price to go up I don't know. Offer them £3 million and Pattison, he's worth it.

Gejon 2
Harry Redknapp has ruled Portsmouth out of the running for Southampton wonderkid Gareth Bale. Wales' youngest ever player has been heavily linked with a move to the Premiership in January after developing a formidable reputation thanks to his impressive displays on the South Coast. Tottenham are reported to have made an approach for the 17-year-old, whilst Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle are also expected to be in the hunt for Bale's signature if the left-back becomes available. However, Redknapp has now ruled out trying to prise the set-piece specialist from his old club and Pompey's bitter rivals. "Bale's a terrific and outstanding young player but we've never made an enquiry about him and don't intend to," Redknapp told the Daily Echo. A New Year transfer battle looks set to ensue for Bale, but Saints boss George Burley has underlined his desire to keep hold of the precociously talented full-back. Bale is secured to a professional contract at St Mary's and Burley says even a bid of £7million would not be enough to convince the Championship side to sell their star asset. "I'm building a team to get us back in the Premiership," said Burley. "I'm under no pressure to sell, not even for £7million." http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=4...es+out+Bale+bid If its not all talk im really not sure its worth the gamble! Over £7m for a kid who has played around 25 games in the championship!
Dr Kenneth Noisewater 0
Yep, £7mill is too much. Half that would be more like it. Prices for British players were just starting to settle down before the Abramovich effect as well.
Baggio 0
TOTTENHAM and Newcastle are leading the race for Derby’s £3million-rated whizkid Giles Barnes, writes DAVE KIDD. Toon boss Glenn Roeder has been an admirer ever since the midfielder, 18, tore apart his academy side two years ago. Spurs chief Martin Jol is also keen on the talented youngster, who can also play on either wing. And the Dutchman may be willing to loan Barnes back to the promotion-chasing Rams for the rest of the season — in a deal similar to the one which took Tom Huddlestone from Pride Park to White Hart Lane two years ago. Barnes is being regularly watched by top-flight scouts, including Chelsea. And Derby boss Billy Davies admits he will not stand in the player’s way if the price is right. http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2002390000-10151,00.html
TheInspiration 1
I'm sure he's a great prospect, but the wings are the last place that need strengthening.
Baggio 0
I'm sure he's a great prospect, but the wings are the last place that need strengthening. He can play on the wings but his best position is as an attacking CM, I think it could be a case of him being too good to miss out on rather than a necessity, if he does continue to develop the way he has then there isn't any reason that he can go on to be an England regular in the future. He's a midfielder who will get goals which is something we could do with to take some of the pressure off our strikers, spending £4 million on him now would be good business for the club and represent a long term investment. We never replaced Bowyer either.

We never replaced Bowyer either. Bowyer was shite in his time here. Seems to have taken that form to West Ham too. Giles Barnes says on an interview on Youtube that his preferred position is up front by the way although he doesnt seem worried where he plays. A Derby supporting friend rates him highly. Apart from a few clips on Youtube I dont know much about either. Bale doesnt appear the quickest which is something we lack at the back. Prefer that we found someone a bit more experienced that Bale anyway.

Gejon 2
There was another higly-rated youngster who played for us for awhile before we sold him to spurs... Lets never sign a highly rated youngster again!!! With the add ons (which we probably will get) we almost doubled what we paid for Jenas!
