The rest of the place is a complete write-off though. Mind you, Wolverhampton makes it look like the Champs Elysees by comparison. But it still doesn't tell the whole story. As I said, it is basically the same situation as in Jormany where the allied bombing is blamed for the sad state of some pretty ugly cities. But in fact even in cities that were hit worst in WWII the major damage in percentage to the architectural substance was done post-war (starting in about one decade later). In Jormany you can easily see the distinction between the former two Jorman states. In many cities of the former GDR the old architectural substance is far better conserved (even in cities like Dresden, where socialists did as a good job as Arthur Harris) than in the West, simply because of the reason that they didn't have the money to rip down complete city centres and rebuild it with ugly concrete stuff. The major turning point in western Europe was the European Architectural Heritage Year 1975. Without this idea by this sodding European Community a lot more cities and towns in the UK or Jormany would look like Birmingham tbh.
