MattM4 0
So who was the better player then? Papin or Shearer?
Tooj 17
So who was the better player then? Papin or Shearer? Shearer I reckon. Although I've always stated Papin's the greatest French striker of all time and a better player than Mr. Henry. Also a question Matt, was Papin the spearhead of that Bordeaux team that played Bayern in the Uefa Cup final in 96 and knocked out a brilliant Milan side along the way? I seem to remember Dugarry and Zidane at the time and I'm sure Papin went to Bordeaux also around the same period as we were linked with him. I just see them both as iconic early nineties legendary finishers... and I would obviously go for Shearer, but some of the goals Papin scored and the consistency he showed was quite unreal. That season (95-96) Bordeaux qualified through the intertoto cup and went all the way to the final. In the 1/4s they drew ACMilan... lost 2-0 at the San Siro, then ridiculously won 3-0 at home... 1st goal | 2nd goal | 3rd goal. Zidane, Dugarry and Lizarazu were all part of that team, and eventualy left the in the summer after that. Papin joined Bdx that same summer, and although he was obviously on the way out careerwise, there was still some quality there. He stayed for two seasons, that were mainly rebuilding ones after all the big names had gone. Left in 98.
