Villarreal have decided not to continue their interest in out of favour Newcastle striker Albert Luque.

The striker has failed to hold down a first-team place in Glenn Roeder's side and has been linked with a move away from St James' Park in the January transfer window.

The director of sport at Villarreal, Jose Manuel Llaneza however insists the club will not be signing either Luque or Salva Ballesta despite their need for attacking options.

Llaneza said: "We are looking for attacking options and both Luque and Ballesta were considered. However our club has a strict budget that we cannot go over."

The Spanish club will instead look to their youth system to bring through the strikers that are so desperately needed.

"The manager Manuel Pellegrini has demanded that reinforcements be brought in to help the attacking line," he added.

"But we have decided to reject these plans and instead look to our youth team to solve the problem."

i predict that we'll loan him out until his contract has nearly run out then sell him for a nominal fee because no one fancies his wages.
