Happy Face 29
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_rad...ear/6166600.stm Equestrian star Zara Phillips, golfer Darren Clarke, tennis player Andy Murray, plus boxers Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton are among the candidates. Cyclist Nicole Cooke, cricketer Monty Panesar, gymnast Beth Tweddle, darts champion Phil Taylor and Formula One's Jenson Button complete the list. The winner will be decided by a public vote during the show on Sunday night. Viewers can vote by phone or text throughout the programme, which is being broadcast from the NEC in Birmingham for the first time, and is live on BBC One from 1900 GMT. Seven men and three women are in the line-up, which boasts representatives from all four nations of the United Kingdom. Clarke is the current favourite with bookmakers after his emotional victory with the European Ryder Cup team just weeks after the death of his wife Heather. But the Northern Irishman has said he does not want to win the award on a sympathy vote, and the contest is expected to be one of the closest for years. At various stages of the last four months, Murray, Phillips and Panesar were rated favourites for the prize, which was won last year by England Ashes hero Andrew Flintoff. The shortlist was drawn up from a combination of online and postal public votes, newspaper and magazine editors and a BBC Sport panel of experts. In a year in which the England's national football and rugby union teams flopped, neither sport is represented. Comedian and cross-channel charity swimmer David Walliams, another former favourite, also misses out. The show, which will be presented by Sue Barker, Gary Lineker and Adrian Chiles, is taking place outside London for the first time in the event's 53-year history. Some 3,000 tickets went on sale to the public in October and sold out in less than 50 minutes. In addition to the main honour, there will also be several other awards for top team, coach, overseas personality, young personality and lifetime achievement. The Helen Rollason Award will be given to someone judged to have shown courage in adversity, while the unsung hero honour goes to a volunteer who has made a real difference to a sports club or team. Forget Tony McCoy, champion jockey for a decade, who surpassed 2500 wins this year. Edited December 4, 2006 by Happy Face

Gemmill 44273
Andy Murray ffs. Good player and a great prospect, but I've detected no trace of a personality.
Gemmill 44273
Clarke's just going to win because his wife died tbh I'd sooner Clarke won it than any of the other names listed though. Zara Phillips?!

sweetleftpeg 0
Clarke's just going to win because his wife died tbh And he's already publicly said he didn't want to be nominated and he'll be annoyed if he wins on the sympathy vote.

snakehips 0
Was thinking last night how it would (in my opinion) be fun to wreck this BBC love-in, by contacting all football message boards and get everyone to vote for some ridiculous person e.g. Ben Thatcher. Just to finish off this embarrassing pile of crap, once and for all.

Tom_NUFC 0
I really don't like the idea of a f*cking Royal winning anyway. They have enough privileges.

If she's good at what she does, she should get recognised the same way Joe Public would.
ewerk 30221
She might be decent at her sport but no one would give a fuck about it or her if she wasn't a royal, thats the only reason shes on the list.
sweetleftpeg 0
Yup, Britain has Andy Priaulx, 2 time World Touring Car Champion for the last 2 years yet the BBC didn't even give him a mention last year and it looks like no fucker will mention him again this year.
