Matty 0
Glenn goes undercover Dec 2 2006 By The Evening Chronicle Newcastle United manager, Glenn Roeder, is set to go undercover tomorrow to check out one of his transfer targets. Roeder will travel to Holland to run the rule over one of the players he hopes to bring in during the January transfer window. But he hasn't asked the home club for a ticket as is the normal practice. Instead, he will arrive unannounced and pay on the gate before taking his place among the Dutch fans. Roeder is wise enough to know that should the Dutch club in question see he is there, then, because it is Newcastle United, the price quoted for his transfer target will shoot up. And, quite naturally, the United boss does not want to alert other clubs to just who he hopes to buy in the January super sales frenzy. That's why the United boss said today: "I have not asked for a ticket to be left under the name of Newcastle United for me tomorrow, but I will be paying my Euros and going behind one of the goals with the rest of the Dutch fans." The Chronicle revealed last month that United had been warned off striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar and left-back Urby Emanuelson by their club, Ajax. United have heeded this warning and have accepted that the highly-rated Dutch pair will not be coming to St James' Park. But United are looking for a left-back, a central defender and a couple of strikers in January. A midfielder is not a priority, but there is one in the Premiership United may bring to Tyneside in January on loan until the end of the season. Meanwhile, there was no rest for Roeder as he took in Arsenal's game with Spurs in the North London derby at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon. Spurs are due at St James' Park this month and United travel to White Hart Lane at the turn of the year. United arrived back in Newcastle following only their third trip to Germany in a European competition in the early hours of yesterday morning. Those players not needing treatment had a warm down yesterday afternoon before being given the weekend off. They will all report back on Monday morning to start their preparations for their first Premiership meeting with Reading, at St James' Park on Wednesday night. adios 717
A midfielder is not a priority, but there is one in the Premiership United may bring to Tyneside in January on loan until the end of the season. Wright-Phillips is the first one that springs to mind, Kenyon has said he can leave at the right price. Did 00-Roeder have to go to the press with this, or have the rules of international espionage changed recently?

ewerk 31657
Fantastic way to help him keep his cover, print it in the newspaper ffs. Didn't Wenger go to see Reyes in training wearing a false moustache and big hat?
Isegrim 10041
That is - unless Roeder is wearing a mask - one of the daftest things I've ever heard. snakehips 0
Does this mean that when Portly Freddie enquires about player X he phones up with a handkerchief over the phone so the club don't know who they're dealing with??? Does this mean that if NUFC put a bid in for a player that the bid will be on un-headed note paper and ask the club to send any reply to a PO Box, so they don't know who they're dealing with??? This skullduggery by Rodders is embarrassing tbh - if in fact it is true. Knowing Rodders, he will probably be in Germany or Italy and not in Holland, thus fooling everyone! Way to go agent Rodders

Guest Patrokles
That is - unless Roeder is wearing a mask - one of the daftest things I've ever heard. Do they really think people won't recognise the manager of a high profile European club? In a crowd of thousands? It's not like the turnstile attendant is going to have a hotline to the press/club chairman.

Are you telling me that if a manager of a top european club was sitting in the Leazes, word wouldnt get round? It doesnt need to be during the game but it would be broadcast on the likes of boards such as this and would therefore get back to the club very easily. Christ on a bike, what do they teach you lot at uni these days?

If the manager of any of the teams outside the current big 4 in Italy, Holland, France, Spain, or Germany sat in the Leazes, do you think anyone would actually recognise them? Would you? I think someone would, especially in a crowd of thousands. The Premierleague is shown all over the world and especially popular in countries with "smaller" leagues like Holland. And despite being not a top team anymore, Newcastle is still represented in the UEFA Cup. You do see people like Roeder a lot on continental Eurosport for example. Do they really think people won't recognise the manager of a high profile European club? I agree the whole thing is a joke and Roeder talking to the Chronicle about it makes it even worse, but I honestly don't think people in Holland would necessarily recognise him. I know no-one in Switzerland would. We may be a high-profile club, but Roeder certainly isn't a high-profile manager, which, incidentally, may be one of the reasons for Roeder not getting the players he wanted in the summer. The post about him looking like your average maths teacher was spot on, too!
