Saw this in the Times2 today and at first I had a chuckle at what is a pretty light hearted article, but it reminded me of a book I read called Freakonomics.

Basically in that book it states how shortsighted the legal system can be; how one case, one piece of legislature can have a dramatic and unforeseen effect.

The example from freakonomics that my mind turned to was the case where a woman fought for the right to terminate a pregnancy, abortion was legalised in her state and after that landmark case mothers who for felt unable to raise a child were able to legal abort the pregnancy. This freedom had a negative (in that it reduced) on crime rates 15-20 years later. Put simply kids from a difficult upbringing were more likely to commit crimes, kids to single mothers were more likely to have a difficult upbringing. The logic follows that the girls who had an abortion (to put it bluntly) removed a likely criminal. I know that sounds harsh, but it's pretty logical if you look at cold hard facts.

ANYHOO, moving away from that rather emotive subject we get to the original piece in the Times2

If there is, as stated a net-exportation of semen from Denmark, surely it follows that there will be an unnatural spread of children born with a bias towards blonde, blue eyes, and of a certain build. It'd be interesting to see how (in 20 or thirty years), this dissemination affects the worlds racial make up.

It also states in the article that Ole Schou encourages the interviewing doctor to handpick ('scuse the phrase) successful candidates to donate for his clinic. If this is the case, then surely this focuses the selection more so.. as only people of a certain level of intellect and application can become doctors. Will these doctors also be more likely to come from certain socio-economic groups? Will that affect their choice? Are things like intelligence or laziness encoded on a genetic level?

so a little thing like ending anonymity for sperm donors in Britain, Norway and Sweden mean that the Danes will breed us out? :D

To follow the argument further if you have a small number of fathers creating lots of children it will reduce the gene pool size and could result in low health.
