SATURDAY 14TH JULY

THE DAM BUSTERS 4.40pm Channel 4

One I really want to see. Shame it's on in the middle of the day with adverts.

MAN ON FIRE 10.45pm BBC1

Excellent action/thriller, well worth a curry and stopping in on Saturday for.

SUNDAY 15TH JULY

HERO 9pm Film4

Strangely I enjoyed it despite it's very dubious politics. Gorgeous.

ONCE IN A LIFETIME: THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE NEW YORK COSMOS 10.30pm BBC2

Football documentary about the New York Cosmos and the stars brought in during the 70's to sell football to the yanks. One for footy fans...as I assume you all are.

MONDAY 16TH JULY

PSYCHO 10pm ITV4

Hitchcock. Legend.

TUESDAY 17TH JULY

INTOLERABLE CRUELTY 8pm ITV2

Terrible as far as the Coen's canon goes, but for a Hollywood romantic comedy it's excellent

THE SHINING 10pm ITV4

Best horror ever, by the man who did the best sci-fi ever, the best war film ever and one of the best comedies ever.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA 10pm More4

I still don't get it. My least favourite Leone film.

THURSDAY 19TH JULY

DELIVERANCE 10pm ITV4

Squeal piggy

FRIDAY 20TH JULY

ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND 9pm Film4

One of the best films of this century. Michel Gondry (did all them weird Bjork videos) directs with his usual visual flair, but the fantastic camera trickery never gets in the way of one of the the all time great screenplays. An excellent premise (erasing memories of soured relationships...including the good stuff) that is followed through to an immensley satisfying and true finale. Charlie Kauffman is a legend.

Agreed for the most part, Man on Fire is for me the best movie since Gladiator, Once in a lifetime I enjoyed, very topical with the Beckham situation, Once upon a time in America, I found tideous, overlong but very well acted, and Deliverance is just a must see movie.

Watched that NY Cosmos thing. That Italian striker was a bit full of himself, wasn't he? :crying:

"Pele man, stay out on the wing, you're no good in the box" :jesuswept:

Pissed off about getting Beckenbauer in too. It's not like he was a rival for his place in the starting XI.

Aye, forgot about that. So late he missed the last bus :jesuswept:

Agree with you about 'Eternal Sunshine...' too btw. I could watch that anytime.

That was a hell of a foul!

I enjoyed the documentary, quite a bit i didn't know about what happened back then. Shame it didn't catch on and as Carlos Alberta said, it was 86 when they should have given the world cup to USA to try and build somethignrather than give it to Mexico a second time, if they were serious about breaking football in the US. Also a shame that the Warners bloke who'd done everything to try and make football big, died 2 years before he would have seen the world cup there.

But as they pointed out at the end, and something else i saw on tv, millions of kids in the USA play football, in fact somewhere i heard more play that than the other 3 major sports put together, because whether the americans want to admit it or not, it is the single best sport to play at any level.

Also funny seeing Werner Roth who was one of the NY Cosmos players, but more importantly was also the captain of the Germany team in 'Escape to victory' :PMT:

It's played a lot because it's cheap too (for insurance etc. as well as equipment compared to US Football for example). Because of that it's played a huge amount in private schools where they simply can't afford the insurance. One problem they do have in terms of developing young talent is that they have a rolling subs thing in junior football (or at least they did have) a la US Football, basketball etc. which tends to make the game very 'helter skelter' and even quicker than the game over here. This means that 'cultured' players don't come to the fore so much. They also inevitably lose a lot of athletes to other sports where the financial rewards are greater. You can guarentee America would be shit hot at football if they ever properly got their act together though imo.

I liked the fella talking about the Italian striker wanting to be president. "he might be a carpenter, that doesn't make him an architect too".

Then at the end it told you what he does now...."carpenter and architect" :crying: Great analogy.

SATURDAY 21ST JULY

DOUBLE INDEMNITY 1.55pm More4

DIAL M FOR MURDER 2.35pm BBC2

Tough choice, if you've seen neither I'd plump for Double Indemnity.

DRAGNET 5pm ITV3

Dan Ackroyd and Tom Hanks do that funny dance in their furs.

DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY 9pm Film4

Canny funny

BUFFALO ‘66 9pm Five US

Meant to be good.

MONDAY 23RD JULY

FIGHT CLUB 10.30pm BBC3

One of the best films of the nineties. Includes a fun Where's Wally type game where Subliminal Tyler Durden's pop up loads before he's introduced.

TUESDAY 24TH JULY

SECRETARY 10.45pm Film4

Nice bit of masochism

I'm glad you thought it was decent. I'm a reasonable man and can accept that tastes differ. You bring your own personal memories and baggage with you when you watch a film like this, and depending on those experiences different people will take different thinks. Having said that, ESOTSM is without doubt the single most perfectly realised film on everything that's good about a relationship that went wrong. It's an uplifting, visual poem on some of the most excrutiating feelings we experience.

And anyone who doesn't agree is a fucking moron.

Just kidding, but I do enjoy it more and more with every viewing. Which is something, considering I loved it to bits the first time around.

It's a class film and Kate Winslet and Jim Carey are both fantastic in it imo. You've summed it up beautifully HF. It does get better the more you watch it too. It has a poetic beauty and you can totally lose yourself in it. That's what I reckon anyway.
