snakehips 0
I believe the european court is going to decide soon on this business about UK residents being able to buy cigs and alcohol abroad without duty payments. As we have a thread about piracy, will this cigs and alcohol case just be the thin end of the wedge in that we should be allowed to buy cd's and dvd's abroad as well, though much cheaper??? Anyone know the ins and outs of this lot?
Gemmill 44258
If this goes through Christ knows where the government are gonna make up the shortfall in lost revenue. Tax increases ahoy.
Lazarus 0
i think the duty on tabs and the cost of dvds are unrelated. though i could be wrong.

This is what I was thinking. The money is going to have to come from somewhere. After all, how on earth are we to afford attacking Iran ffs?? Stealth taxes ahoy! I must say I was a bit sceptical when Blair and Brown were coming out the other week with all the shite about the environment etc etc; I suspected this lot was just a cover for more taxes of some description. Guest alex
You pay the same tax (more or less) regardless of who is in power I reckon, you just pay it in different ways. IMO different governments over the years have created a situation whereby there is a massive black market in booze / tabs from abroad. Customs and Excise are far more arsed about those coming in than illicit drugs. The price difference between here and the place just the other side of the Channel is ridiculous. You're probably right, but I wondered which smart arse can then make the next step of 'If it can't apply to alcohol etc, why not consumer goods?'... Aye some lass at work has had me buying tabs for her the last couple of weeks I've been in Holland. 39 Euros for 200 where they're about £45 for 200 over here. She smokes Mayfair though so I look like a right Harry Ramp at the airport.
snakehips 0
You're right about the tax being the same regardless of which crap govt we have, Alex. And also about the tabs and drink being more interesting for the Customs than drugs. Did anyone notice the announcement the other day that 200 (200!) Customs offices around the country are going to close? Edited November 23, 2006 by snakehips

sweetleftpeg 0
Apparently, the government make £16b from duty tax a year. We've got a lot of wars to fund you know.
snakehips 0
They are going to make beer and tabs cheaper, but, as a true Geordie, I have to ask: What about LARD??!!!!
Guest alex
Labour would win the next election by a landslide if they cancelled duty then announced they were pulling out of Iraq to finance it. I should be a government advisor tbh.

sweetleftpeg 0
Just announced the EU have blocked it. Somewhere in London, Tony Blair lets out a sigh and gets out his map of Iran.
Gemmill 44258
I'm glad they've blocked it. Keep the smokers paying through the nose for their filthy habit.
Guest alex
In a way I can see a case for why drink in this country should be more heavily taxed, given the way some fuckers behave and the amount of police resources that go into looking after places like the Toon on a weekend. That said, I don't see why people like me should have to pay for people who can't control themselves after a few (manc-mag for example).
snakehips 0
I suppose it is for the best. This country would have just gone into melt-down due to lost revenue. Blair and Brown on the piss, as we speak.

We're having a huge clearout (12.5k staff to go by the end of 2008 or summit) and restructuring the place to get rid off the shite, ( or at least thats what should happen ). The Fish 10682
If this goes through Christ knows where the government are gonna make up the shortfall in lost revenue. Tax increases ahoy. simple legalise marijuana while repeating the steady taxation increase on tobacco, alcohol and petrol. tbh, tax the fuck out of smokers, they must cost the NHS more than any other subserction of society Shirley! £10 for a pack of ten fags should bring in a sizable chunk of revenue to be spent on streamlining the NHS and Armed Forces, improving the schooling system and providing for those genuinely in need. Expel undesirables, be they fundamentalists of Muslim, Christian or Pagan sects. Expel them to the continent with the simple mandate. If you rail against this country we will pay for your expulsion, and give you enough money to get to the country which exhibits the virtues you extol (sp?) I love black and white solutions, makes life so much easier.... if only, eh?
