Newcastle United are ready to compete for the signature of Fernando Ricksen.

 

The Dutch international has been on a season-long loan at Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg after he fell out with Rangers coach Paul Le Guen.

 

Ricksen has already stated he would like to remain in Russia where he has again flourished under the tutelage of Dick Advocaat.

 

However, his performances have not gone unnoticed and a number of Premiership clubs have been taking a close look.

 

Now Russian sources are stating that Newcastle are ready to make a move.

 

It is also claimed that Ricksen has spoken with former Gers team-mate Craig Moore about Newcastle and he has received a glowing recommendation.

 

Zenit, though, are determined to keep Ricksen.

 

"We got an agreement in principle that Glasgow will sell us Fernando," stated Konstantin Sarsaniya, Zenit's director of sport.

 

Le Guen says that Ricksen's future is in his own hands.

 

"It depends on what Fernando wants to do," said the Rangers chief.

 

"There is a possibility he can stay in Russia but I will probably have a chat with him soon to consider his position."

 

With the Russian season all but finished Ricksen will be due to return to Scotland next month - at which point Newcastle could look to strike a deal, if Zenit have not already finalised an agreement.

I would like to think we could get a better a defender/midfielder then him, but the phrase, "Beggars can't be choosers" springs to mind. Not that I would condone his signing, we need all the players. especially defenders, we can get, even if its just to provide cover and add some compettiton for places. On the plus side he does appear to be able to play through injury.

Nah he was for one season. The one he played in centre midfield. When he played at right back he wasn't that great. If we're trying to replace Carr at right back, Ricksen isn't the answer.

It all really depends on which Fernando Ricksen we get, the drunken one who lets off fireworks in the early hours of the morning and sings Rangers songs through Celtic player Alan Thompson's letterbox, or the Fernando who had a brilliant season as skipper before handing the captain's armband back to Barry Ferguson during pre-season, then returning to the drunken Ricksen of old, also one and a half good season's in five for Rangers certaintly didn't endear himself to the Rangers support, certainly not a right back, even Bobby Petta (not what u do when the wife isn't looking) tore him to ribbons, but possibly a shitebag hothead in midfield like Robbie Savage, who'll karate kick players and resort to fly kicks off the ball at times.

Moore has done well but let's not forget Boumsong who was supposed to be great. As a right back he is crap and will play man before ball.
