Roeder hit by tumour jibe

November 20, 2006

GLENN ROEDER was hit by sick taunts from Arsenal fans during Newcastle’s draw at The Emirates.

A small number behind the dugout chanted “Sit down, tumour boy” when the Toon boss got up to shout out instructions from his technical area on Saturday.

The incident echoed what happened when former West Ham boss Roeder returned to Upton Park in September.

Arsenal make it clear in their club programme they will not tolerate any form of foul language or racist chanting and they will take action through the courts if necessary to stamp out unacceptable behaviour.

Ironically, one of Newcastle’s backroom staff was later reported to stewards by a fan for gesturing at supporters when Kieron Dyer put the Magpies ahead.

The Toon employee, who has not been named but was not one of the main coaches, appeared to be responding to the “tumour boy” chants — a reference to the life-saving brain op Roeder had while in charge of West Ham.

Roeder said he had no time for fans who resorted to such offensive language.

He said: “If a supporter is critical of a brain tumour I had 3½ years ago, I wouldn’t respect him anyway. It’s not going to bother me. I didn’t hear it. Lucky I’m deaf.”

The Roeder taunts came on the same day Portsmouth’s Lomana LuaLua revealed in SunSport that twisted Pompey fans had said on internet message boards they were glad his son Jesus had died.

The six-month-old baby passed away last January from pneumonia.

Fratton boss Harry Redknapp hit out at the ‘yobs’, saying: “Who would say we’re glad your baby’s dead?

“I don’t think anyone would say that. There’s always a few sickos about — but they’re not Portsmouth supporters.

“They’re probably a couple of sickos who go on websites. I don’t know who they are.”

Defiant LuaLua, 25, says he will keep the evil messages and use them as motivation.

He bagged Pompey’s winner against Watford on Saturday.

If you are a top-level manager (Glenn's not ability wise, just club wise) you expect baiting from opposition fans. If he can't take it, he can fuck off tbh.

One of his coaching staff? Probably Lee Clark tbh. Surprised he can gurn and move his fingers at the same time.

Yeah, you're right it is the same. my mistake.

Comparing taunting over an illness to taunting over the colour of your skin and years of prejudice is the same ;)

Someone took the piss out of me the other day for having a cold, they might as well have called me black

Haha, comparable with racial chanting. Mongingly consistent

Tell me how it's not, oh great wise one ??

You dont find yourself being held back by society due to pre-conceived notions of you purely on account of the fact you've had a brain tumour. Overlooked for jobs, that sort of thing. Leazes will explain that better.

Instead of telling the press he ignores it hasn't heard it, why doesn't he just shut up. I don't condone what the people have shouted, i.e. 'tumour boy' but it's par for the course at the match tbh.

Slight difference between a cold and a brain tumour ;)

To the individual concerned surely a taunt about a serious illness which could have killed them, and any other people within earshot or reading the report who's friends/family have suffered similarly, is deeply offensive and hurtfull.

Similarly a taunt about skin colour is deeply offensive, but a taunt about skin colour isn't a taunt about something that could kill you.

Both simply show the ignorance of the taunter, and I fail to see any lesser offence in either

You don't die from being held back/overlooked for jobs.

This isn't about offence/discrimination to a population or section of society at large it's about effect on an individual, and should that individual have to put up with it without comment.

I'm not saying that the comment wasn't distasteful (it was), but to put it in an understandable context, one of the chants was laughing at a persons misfortune at contracting a brain tumour, the other example was laughing at a person for believing they are actually an inferior human being.

Last I heard having a black/yellow/brown skin wasn't a cause for life-saving medical treatment.

I'm not saying racial taunting is acceptable in any way BUT taunting about a potentially fatal medical condition is no less offensive, and the logic that says why someone should "put up or shut up" in those circumstances is beyond me.

Yeah, some people haven't been so lucky as to have the opportunity for life saving treatment due to the colour of their skin tbh.

Give up, eh?

That doesn't even begin to make sense

Please explain your logic why Roeder has no right to make comment about the taunting, and therefore by inference why said taunting is acceptable

Because it's not that offensive. Shows him up to be a whining tart and it isn't the first time.

*sob* they made fun of me, sir, a condition which I haven't even got anymore but I still don't like it *sob*

Trying (but failing) to divert criticism away from his team's poor form is his aim.

No doubt you'll come back to me and said no-one has ever died as a direct result of them being black again.

You've just inspired my from btw ;)

You really believe "it's not that offensive"? and therefore acceptable ?

If Roeder had lost his wife due to a brain tumor (for example) then yes, it's offensive.

How is it offensive when he doesn't actually have a brain tumor anymore? Would you seriously be offended if someone shouted it at you?

Our fans jibe other managers and players alike FACT. Its not nice but hey.

True but I'd like to think we don't sink that low.

The point that was made was that Roeder has no right to respond, I just begged to differ on the acceptability of the jibe and his right to respond.
