Papa Lazaru 0
I think it would be interesting to see opinions on the Pele/Maradonna debate away from England where many people will never judge Maradonna neutrally because he had the sense to punch a ball he couldn't reach with his head to score a goal! Yes he cheated, but the fuckwitt ref and linsmen are the dicks in that scenario, Maradonna just got away with a handball. Anyway its Maradonna for me, took a pretty average team almost singlehandedly to a world cup win. Took Napoli from nowhere to a title which they haven't come close to before or since as far as i'm aware, and did the business in Spain as well. The fact that he's a bit of a nutter and possibly an arsehole as well doesn't affect how good a player he was. And the fact that the best player in the world would actually be shorter than me in no way affects my decision!!!

Guest alex
Argentina had a canny side in '86 but your points still stand. I think Napoli won the league title twice (and the UEFA Cup) with Maradona and (I think) they were the first and remain the only team from the south of Italy to win the league. Ciro Ferrara played in the same Napoli side too.
Dr Gloom 21794
maradona for me, but i'm biased because pele was before my time. there's no doubt that pele played in better brazil sided than the 86 argentina side that won the world cup. maradona pretty much single-handedly guided an average argentina to the 90 final too

Noelie 103
back to the football, pele was definitely the most talented forward ever, ................................ Bollocks Maradonna himself said that he didn't know if he was better than Pele but without a doubt Di Stefano was Di Stefano played 6 times for Argentina, 4 times for Columbia, and 31 times for Spain, best ever in my book Edited November 20, 2006 by Noelie

sweetleftpeg 0
Maradona was the best footballer I've ever seen 'live' as it was. Although Pele was fucking class in Escape to Victory.

Noelie 103
Did you know that Pele said George Best was the greatest player in the world? And did you know that Pele's goalscoring record is questionable as a lot of them were scored in friendly games which wouldn't count in some places. Maradona was the best I have seen by a long way. Cant comment on Pele but if he was better then he was something very very special. My mind cant really compute how a footballer could be better than Maradona.

Noelie 103
just a name to throw into this, ferenc puskas. now that was a footballer. Good name to bring up, Puskas played 354 games for Kispest/Honved and scored 357 goals. For Real Madrid he played 179 games and scored 155 goals. He played 85 games for Hungary and scored 84 goals. I doubt Pele or Maradona could match that goals to games record.

And did you know that Pele's goalscoring record is questionable as a lot of them were scored in friendly games which wouldn't count in some places. This quote gets brought up all the time and is often misinterpreted imo. George Best was a true football genius and is arguably one of the top 10 players ever (certainly one of the top 20). When Pele made the comment about Best (in the 60's iirc) it was possibly true. It doesn't mean he was greatest player ever though (or even that Pele thought that), which is often what it is taken to mean. Rather that he was the best player in the world at that time. No mean feat like.

I doubt Pele or Maradona could match that goals to games record. Teams played 4-2-4, had no idea how to defend, and the keepers were shit in those days. I'm not saying he wasn't a good player, but I reckon his goal scoring record would be a lot more modest in the modern game.
tinofbeans 91
teams played 3-2-5 against hungary (the england team for example that lost 6-3 at home and 7-1 away). it wasn't until the late 50's that teams sussed out the hungarian teams formation and why it was so succesful. by then of course the team had disentegrated and the players concetrated on their club football.
