Everyone talks about Shola playing through the pain barrier, and he get's praised to high heaven for doing so,but when it comes to poor old Steve Harper he get's brushed aside as a nobody, yet he sticks in there as number 2 keeper and when a chance arises he tries to grasp it,but then get's kicked back down again when the trophy name is back fit and well,i admire his persistence in being number 2 for many a year!

I think Harper's recent run in the team has proven he's way behind Given's ability.

Given is a better keeper without doubt, but way behind? He's always played pretty well (especially without a first team run most often) and this time he was carrying a nasty injury for most of his time playing.

tbh I think we've been lucky to have had a 2nd keeper as good as him, although we've been blessed in that dept. (if not always all others) for a long while now.

Xabi Alonso and the howler v Talinn shows he's a heap of shit tbh

People who think he's the 2nd best backup in the league want a lobotomy

Yup, goalies never make mistakes do they?

I think Given's howler with Dublin (I think) was far worse. I think he's excellent back-up, but not in Given's class.

Harper can't wait for Shay to get back, he's said so himself, he's in agony and needs his op.

Apart from the two errors in the first few games, I think he's been excellent.

Agreed.

I also wouldn't class the Alonso goal as an error. he slipped. Our outfield players do it all the time. It's just unfortunate that his slip cost a fluke of a goal.

Watch it again, he could have so easily took a few steps to the left and caught it. It bounced 8 yards from the goal ffs

People saying "Excellent backup", "he's been excellent". Typical of the opinion of him, overrating him that much.

He keeps coming into play for the team for short stretches after having played nothing but reserve matches for months and months (a year sometimes), name me any player that would come on and play at his very best in that situation?

He's not as good as Given, but he's good enough that broadly when Given is injured we don't really, really miss him, and anyone one else as good as him we'd never have kept for so long as a 2nd goalie (especially as Given is so rarely out).

I mean for most of this run he's been playing with an injury that in most other circumstances no one else would have been playing with in the first place.

I'm amazed (and more than a little appalled tbh) that anyone can say he's shite.

Kind of a shit point really seen as he dropped absolute howlers in his first few games between the sticks

But then when was his last 1st team run? Or game for that matter?

Reserve football is better than nothing, but it's still not the same thing. Barring that goal this time, he's always done well enough when he's come in (and he's done well this time really, barring that).

Do you expect Owen to be scoring solo wonder goals within a few weeks of his comeback? If not how can you expect Harper to be as match sharp the instant he gets a 1st team game? (and it's not as though Given, good as he is, is infallible.)

It is fair to say he's not as good as Given, but it's pretty naff to slate him so much given the situation he usually gets games and when he does pretty well for us all things considered.

He's done alright, but Given should come back in.

He's incredibly overrated though, for every game he doesn't play people's opinions of him rise. Clear case of absence making the heart grow fonder. He's a decent keeper, nothing more, and all this talk of he should be England keeper are mental.
