Michael Owen has told Sky Sports News he has not given up hope of returning from his serious knee injury during the current campaign.

The England striker is currently sidelined after rupturing his cruciate ligament during England's 2-2 draw with Sweden at the World Cup finals.

Owen's injury was expected to keep him out for the entire season, but after undergoing surgery with famed knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman the Magpies hot-shot is in a positive frame of mind.

The turn of the year will be crucial for his comeback schedule, with a scan planned to assess the rate of his recovery, but after making just 10 appearances for The Magpies since his move from Real Madrid, the former Liverpool star says he has not given up hope of adding to that tally before the end of May.

"You don't want to create a false belief so when I first had it done I thought you might as well write the season off and everyone else did as well but the operation was great," Owen said in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News.

"The surgeon was happy with what he saw inside my knee and sees no reason, along as I have a good rehabilitation, to think there will be any future damage.

"I would love to play again this season.

"How long I play and if I play - and that is the big question - until I step up my programme it is impossible to tell.

"Certainly you have got to have a target when you are down in the gym every day and my target is certainly to play again this season."

Explaining the processes involved in his rehabilitation, Owen stated he can begin to accelerate his comeback if a scan at the end of the year yields positive results.

"I'm still in there [the gym], and I shall be for quite a while yet obviously," Owen added.

"I'm rowing, I'm on the bike, I'm walking on an incline on the treadmill and I'm swimming so that is probably the case for another four weeks then we will start picking things up gradually.

"I've got to have a scan as well, that's in December or early January, and as long as they say the bone is knitting together with the graft then we can push on.

"Round the turn of the year will be the important bit and then it will be all systems go for a return."

In Owen's absence Glenn Roeder's side have been struggling in the league and currently find themselves in the relegation zone having taken nine points from their first 12 games.

A tricky trip to Arsenal's Emirates Stadium awaits on Saturday, but Owen is hopeful his team-mates can turn the club's poor start to the season around.

"We have done particularly well in the cup competitions but not so well in the league, and Arsenal away is always going to be a tough game.

"They played really well against Liverpool the other day.

"It is always a top place to go and we have got a couple of really important games coming up.

"We have got Watford coming up, and Portsmouth at home and we need to pick up points in the league really.

"Hopefully we can progress in the cups because this place would take off if we won some silverware, but I think we need to pick up a couple of good results in the league to take the pressure off."

Preferably the premiership trophy, but it seems everyone only ever talks about winning the F.A cup or the worthless cup at SJP,those wouldnt be a bad thing if you had a good footballing side to look back on,if we won silverware with the present side, then it would knock the shine off cause they are shite.

If he'd mentioned winning the prem people would have had a go seen as it would have been pie in the Sky. No one talks about it because we've got no chance of doing it for the foreseeable.

We're shit, and we know we are. We're shit, and we know we are.

I'm still here now we are shit, I'm still here now we are shit.

Just a couple of ditties to sing at the match.

Re the Belgravia group stuff, it looks like they want to build a hotel and casino as well. Other than that, I still can't figure it all out as to how they could hope to make any money off NUFC

I would't be surprised to see Owen off at the first chance he gets, once he is fit again.

Although it depends what his injuries do to him, Owen with reduced pace is a much lesser player than say Shearer with reduced pace.

Where is Owen going to get anything like the wages he's on here. He'll only leave if he's given away if we go down imo.

Depends on how he plays really.

Owen back to his very best (and not getting injured every other match), would have other clubs looking at him (he likely only came here because he really wanted out of RM, Liverpool didn't want him back, Shearer made a very strong case, and the money - but the chance of genuine silverware at another club, even with a wage reduction, would certainly tempt him I'm sure).... although the biggest issue is likely to be that I doubt anyone else would pay anything like the amount NUFC paid for him, fee-wise.

The irony is the more a shadow of his former self he is the more chance we have of keeping him.

Does anyone remember the end of last season when he was back training and we were all questioning why he wasn't being played? Roeder then came out with some speech about how he won't play people who have/had a serious injury because he doesn't think it's fair. With that in mind, can anyone expalin me to why Shola is supposedly playing tomorrow?

Because Owen wouldn't stand for being played in case anything happened to put back his England comeback. Shola on the other hand would run through walls to play for the club, and is treated like shit because he's not one of the big name trophy players.

They are just going to shoot Shola anyway, so they are just getting their money out of him first.

Seriously it's probably because Shola isn't coming back from injury but has one that is going to get worse and need treatment anyway (although it should have been treated a LONG time ago IMO), and that Shola is likely desperate to play.

In fairness Roeder doesn't tend to rush people back (and I think that is probably wise, it's only IMO but I suspect if Owen had not gone to the WC and had just had rest and a pre-season we'd have had him fit and scoring for this season), maybe with Shola it's just the above and the genuinely desperate situation the club is in. :(
