Obi told: Get out of Toon quick

November 15, 2006

OBAFEMI MARTINS has been told to quit Newcastle — before it is too late.

Nigerian FA chief Waidi Akanni reckons the £10million hitman made a mistake joining Toon from Inter Milan last summer.

He insists Martins, who could return from a hamstring injury at Arsenal on Saturday, should jump ship before Glenn Roeder’s side get relegated.

Akanni said: “Martins should have moved to a winning team in the Premiership — not a struggling side like Newcastle. If something is not done urgently, his career might suffer.”

Martins, 22, has been plagued by injuries since his move and has scored only once in 10 games.

Akanni added: “Martins has not been playing well, everybody can see that.

“The Premiership is a tough league and for a player to come from Serie A to England and not play well is really disturbing.

“After a year or two, the club might want to dump such a player.

“I only hope Newcastle can come up with a winning strategy so Obafemi can raise his game and save his career.

“Otherwise, if Newcastle go down, he would have to look elsewhere — and I’m not sure any Premiership side would want to look his way as he has not been playing well.”

Toon boss Roeder wants fans to be patient with Martins — as Arsenal were with Thierry Henry.

Martins has yet to convince the Toon Army he is worthy of Alan Shearer’s old No 9 shirt.

But Roeder said: “I’ve seen enough of Oba in training and games to have complete faith in him.

“He’s only 22, he’s come from Italy and a different culture and we have to be more tolerant as far as he is concerned.

“Henry did not have an immediate impact when he joined Arsenal but Arsene Wenger was patient with him and the rest, as they say, is history.”

Is that the stock standard answer to every player that doesnt settle immediately? Compare them to Henry...

I have full faith in Martins if we get rid of Roeder and or magically Roeder gets the idea that we arent playing to the advantage of Martins.

I just hope the inclusion of Dyer can only help Martins.

Unlessd they're name is Luque, Albert

Then its...... "he only managed 1 goal against the Serie A leaders yesterday so hes not even getting on the bench from now on".

To be honest, he needs someone who can play with their back to goal to play alongside him. Not that I'm convinced he would be worth anything like £10m even then.

Mark under 'panic buy' due to lack of 'planning' tbh.

Its not through lack of effort that Martins hasn't done the business for us yet, as he runs his socks off, fights and gets in some good positions (unlike others i could mention). Things will get better for him i'm sure he just needs some luck to restore his confidence and then he could be on a roll. Although disapointing so far I'm much more hopefull of him than i am of other players and we need to stick with him in order for him to come good.

Hmm, Mr. Nigerian FA Chief (I guess I already got various emails from his family members). Maybe we are a struggling side just because of the likes of Martins?

Don't tell me you've received letters telling you of inheriting millions of pounds/euros, and all you need to do is send them your bank details, as well ?;):D

That's just unbelievable, or whatever they say in Nigeria. Unbelievable, I would think. We're two lucky, lucky chaps!

I think with all the money I am entitled to get from people from Nigeria, I could buy Newcastle United (or finance invading Poland if Fat Fred doesn't want to sell to a Jorman).
