Was talking about this in the pub before and it stumped me.

Since Shearer.. when was the last big money signing that actually came good?

we're talking over £8m here.

Robert- Good but incosistent and rendered useless by Souness' football

Luque- Doesn't seem to have the speed of thought or determination to suceed in the Prem

Martins- jury's still out on this one, but I have big reservations re: his movement and finishing

Owen- crock and doesn't really want to be here, but no-one doubts his talent.

Woodgate- see above, but sub doesn't with didn't

Was thinking about this today. It's about time we took a risk on kids from the Championship instead. I don't know much about Nugent, but it seems to me that it would make more sense paying say £5m for him and giving him a bit of a payrise than paying £10m for a Martins or a Luque and paying them double the wage you would for someone like Nugent.

When it comes down to it, the Luque/Martins deal represents a far bigger gamble at a far higher cost.

Not sure how much we spent on:-

Bellamy.............good buy, too bad we lost him.

Dyer..................has not lived up to potential............yet.

About 6 million apiece.

Robert was undoubtedly a success for the most part.

You can lump Boumsong into the £8m+ group.

Overall our big signings have been shite. We need a huge overall in our scouting system and need to be confident enough to give our young players a go in the first team. The cases of Finnigan being ignored for the tie against Palmero and Pav being preferred to Krul on the bench against Sheffield United are a joke; whats the point in employing these players if they can't be called upon after proving themselves time and time again in the reserves.
