The thing is all of these scandals are breaking in the first world where the media, the internet and "decent" justice systems are all doing their best (though could do a lot better for example prosecuting the Irish bishops). I know we've disagreed about this in the past Stevie, but you need to accept that a lot of South Tynesiders feel that the Tyne part of that epithet counts for a lot in terms of their identity. It's not universal - I've never claimed that - but to suggest that South Tynesiders "naturally" feel aligned to Sunderland is insulting to a lot of people whether they actually follow NUFC or even have no interest in Football. I'd also add that there are vast tracts of Newcastle and North Tyneside which are far bigger shitholes and more scum ridden than most of ST.
