  1. Yep, in between the paddling pools and the anti-freeze. It's murder getting pitta bread here.
  2. I don't remember saying it was foolproof or easy. Just trying to help. What areas do you want to write about/interested in? I'm just remembering another conversation we had a few months back when you effectively said as much Sports reporting and/or feature writing are what i'd eventually like to do but at the minute i'm willing to try my hand at just about anything. If it's sports reporting you have to specialise in one area ideally and don't just say football. Try and find a sporting area that is a little undersubscribed and by that I don't mean fencing or table tennis. You can get to the football desk later, the first goal is to get into the office. Try and get into a newspaper and magazine perhaps not even as writer, that is the best way to get to know the people in there and who you need to impress and at the same time you are in a key position to strike (a few people are ill and the need to send someone to Marseilles in the morning etc..) Start working on a second language as you can jump many a queue if you can be hired to live/report from somewhere in Europe. Do you have any other area of expertise outside of sports if so, this is what I'd start banging out unsolicited articles about and hit smaller organisations with smaller budgets who are on the look out for cheap copy. Try and forget all the shit you've just spent three years learning (getting key points into the first para and whatnot). I don't know where you live but move to London.

  4. That's exactly the same result, course and dirty makem poly degree that I have.. We can probably talk at length about how shite the course is then I'm fairly sure that when I did it it was the first year it was ever run. They cobbled together bits of media studies and Media production with a bit of journalism. I have to say that concentrating on the basics of print journlism and getting that spot on would have been infinitely more useful in terms of preparing me for the world of work. Is the job in journalism? Sounds like it hasn't changed a bit It's for a sixth month internship at the Sunderland Echo contributing to a multimedia journalism project they're running. Good luck mate, it's very tough at the moment (there are loads of experienced people out of work) so getting experience like that will be vital. The pay is shit, but the job is great. Aye, it seems nigh on impossible to get a job in journalism at the minute. I've applied for the few trainee reporter roles that have popped up around the country but they've been getting around 200 applicants so I don't really stand a chance. I've got another interview at CBI in a few weeks too, for a PR/Journalism role so i'm keeping my fingers crossed. Write articles and send them all over the place is another way. If it was that simple then there wouldn't be loads of highly experience professionals on the scrap heap. It won't help you thinking like that.

  8. You have a first from Cambridge? What subject if you don't mind me asking? Congratulations Skol and (belatedly) Smogeordie. No, I don't. There was some controversy with my final paper which was resolved by some old duffer from Cambridge Uni they called in. I had to sit with him one to one and talk about my ideas (having forgotten most of it ). Lovely bloke, I think he was deaf which helped. Controversy? Was it about the Jews, Parky? Was it in history Parky? You boys won't be happy till they lock me up innit?

It was about the re-reading of the work Samuel Beckett, foregrounded by a textual analysis using the deconstructionist techniques of Derrida, Nietzsche and Foucalt if you must know. To this day I don't really know what it was about.
  10. You're right Gemma I never recovered from it.
  11. Luque is a winger as is Guti.

  13. I'll have you know I abated (and was correct) about all the JFK returning fears.
  14. Go fancy dressed as Kovic. It's one of those events where I have to behave which means not having the 'tipping point' 5th pint.
  15. One has to wonder where Real get their money from.

  20. No, survival in the PL is the bare minimum. Don't forget that in Shepherd's ten full seasons as chairman we finished in the bottom half for six of those. The problem was that the money he was spending wasn't sustainable given the mediocre returns. blimey. Please tell us who in the premiership is not in debt and getting near the trophies. In fact, tell us anybody who doesn't have these debts. Thought NO type posters were a thing of the past They owe no apologies for trying to bring the best possible players to the club. I think Hull are the only club with no debt iirc.
  21. Is Fish really fat or is this an insider thing?
