House of Lords 'to be dragged into 21st century'
Park Life replied to Park Life's topic in General Chat
Lest one forget it was these old crunchies that held back the worst excesses of Thatcherism. I would leave the Lords completely untouched and perhaps increase their powers to hold back/delay bad legislation. Yes, because geriatric deranged old etonian in-bred syphilitic bastards with nothing better to do but sleep all day in the Lords are the guardians of democracy. Give it to the celebrities, at least they've earned it with raw talent. I doubt an aristo could hold down a bit part on Hollioaks. 3 out of 4 asleep in the back row.... A resonable response to the daily boredom of politics.. See, you wouldn't get that with the youthful vigour of a Tony Blackburn 'Kid' Jensen ftw. -

Thatcher speech to the Lords on the Maastricht treaty. "I very much agree with the noble Viscount, Lord Tonypandy. Let me make it quite clear that we are now debating whether we go further with the Maastricht Treaty. I agree with his fundamental underlying assumption; namely, that it is that treaty which takes us over the top to a new political entity, a European union, which we have never had before. Before that, we had never gone that way but had kept quite a bit of sovereignty, and it is the last lot that we are in danger of losing." -

I don't know about leaving it untouched but there certainly needs to be stronger checks on the HoC and of course increased power means that the Lords will have to become more accountable. HoC is full of cunts and they need watching, HoL however has has very good grouping of good minds and strong alcohol.....The way forward imo. -

My sentiments exactly. They also tend to be completely unswayable after the 3rd G&T. -

"One of the most significant changes will finally bring an end to the centuries-old hereditary principle from Britain’s legislature. By-elections held on the death of a hereditary peer to elect a replacement will come to an end, and their number will gradually dwindle away. One source said: “It’s taking a long time, but the House of Lords is finally being dragged into the 21st century.” Shame. Some of these old renegade buffers are worth a hundred MP's when goaded.

For the winning punters chancing their luck at Hawaiian Gardens' charity bingo hall in the heart of one of California's poorest towns, the big prize is $500. The losers walk away with little more than an assurance that their dollars are destined for a good cause. But the real winners and losers live many thousands of miles away, where the profits from the nightly ritual of numbers-calling fund what critics describe as a form of ethnic cleansing by extremist organisations. Each dollar spent on bingo by the mostly Latino residents of Hawaiian Gardens, on the outskirts of Los Angeles, helps fund Jewish settlements on Palestinian land in some of the most sensitive areas of occupied East Jerusalem, particularly the Muslim quarter of the old city, and West Bank towns such as Hebron where the Israeli military has forced Arabs out of their properties in their thousands. 'The majority of bingo customers don't realise where their money is going' Link to this audio Over the past 20 years, the bingo hall has funnelled tens of millions of dollars in to what its opponents — including rabbis serving the Hawaiian Gardens area — describe as an ideologically-driven strategy to grab land for Israel, as well as contributing to influential American groups and thinktanks backing Israel's more hawkish governments. But the bingo operation, owned by an American Jewish doctor and millionaire, Irving Moskowitz, has taken on added significance in recent weeks as President Barack Obama has laid down a marker to Israel in demanding an end to settlement construction, which the White House regards as a major obstacle to peace." It makes one wonder.

You donkeys didn't even know the Pentagon had a bigger space budget than nasa. Please put it down.

Completely irrelevant. You just believe what you want to believe Parky, no matter what empirical evidence your presented with. Now that the lunar modules and footprints have been shown by the latest satellites you're saying they were created by robots (despite the fact that digital technology was embryonic 40 years ago), have I got this right? Seriously, if you really believe this I fear for your sanity. Robots??! Now that really would be something. That new Japanese one has emotions apparently. Once it learns to type we're fucked!

Not really worth arguing about as there isn't a scrap of evidence for what you suggest but they're two totally different things mainly due to one being an aircraft developed in top secret and the other being a space programme that was literally being scrutinised by the world. As I alluded to though the actions of the Russians suggest they were pretty certain the US sent men to the moon. Not least as they gave up their attempts to send a man to the moon as soon as the Americans beat them to it. Just demonstrating secret keeping ain't hard. If you genuinely can't see the difference it's little wonder you're so full of shit tbh. I'd suggest the Russians had an inkling on the B2's existence though, no? The Russians are about 10 years behind on stealth and have only very recently started using elements of it in their latest planes. So I guess they had no idea. How exactly does 'the world scrutinise' the space programme?

About a 100,000 live on the streets in LA.

Facebook is pretty shit as well.

The B2 stealth bomber is a good example of compartmentalized security. Until the first one was rolled out for public gaze in late 1989, a plane that had cost 30 billion $$$ had been kept completely secret for a decade. A lot more people worked on that (hundreds) than the few dozen or so it would have needed to shoot footage of the the fake Apollo 11 landing.

Isn't it 9 or so people it goes through between the sky and the sea there? Enjoy that cup of tea. There's also that thing that oestrogen isn't properly broken down by the body, so there's a stack of it in the London water supply. Probably explains why the "men" down here are so lavender. Least of your worries Fishy. Pass the bubbly dahlink.

The Soloist. Good idea for a film (down and out mad musician saved by journalist), ruined by a meandering script and Robert Downey who can't really carry such roles (the journalist). Based on a true story of sorts.
