John Boehner squares up to Obama as House votes for $61bn in cuts House of Representatives provokes threat of veto from Barack Obama – and raises prospect of a government shutdown Paul Harris in New York The Observer, Sunday 20 February 2011 John Boehner, Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, pushed through a massive package of cuts by 235 votes to 192, declaring: 'We will not stop here.' Photograph: Alex Wong/Getty Images Republicans pushed through a draconian series of budget cuts worth tens of billions of dollars on Saturday, raising the prospect of a showdown with President Barack Obama. Emboldened by their 2010 midterm election victory and swelled by Tea Party-backed newcomers, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives signed off on federal spending cuts worth $61bn. The axe will fall on federal money for public broadcasting, environmental programmes, Obama's healthcare reforms and the family planning organisation Planned Parenthood. Even Obama's own staff face $120m of cuts. Personnel would be withdrawn from key areas including the reform of Wall Street. Some government agencies face budget cuts as high as 40%; the largest reduction in federal government spending since the second world war. "For the first time in many years, the people's house was allowed to work its will – and the result was one of the largest spending cuts in American history," said the Republican house speaker, John Boehner. "We will not stop here in our efforts to cut spending, not when we're broke and Washington's spending binge is making it harder to create jobs."

Not much you can actually do about fanatics such as this (to prevent a tragedy) of whatever persuasion if they are determined and personally cogent and organised. However it is the case that there are moments within the timeline of such tragedies where ocassionally red flags come up (his internet based manifesto for one - but it was only online for a few hours before the killings). There must be thousands around Europe of neo-fascist right wing extremist who have a propensity for violence but IMO this nutter is way off the scale and looks to me like a fully fledged psychopath. This must be really tough for the childrens parents.

This. He had one disappointing season by all accounts and PSG brought in Gameiro because they're owned by Qatar's sovereign wealth fund. That doesn't make Erding a castoff, perhaps he just won't fit into their system now. A different type of player as far as I'm aware. Would the club put this much supposed effort into a player they were "settling for"? Only 24 still time to mature into a better striker. Goal ratio will improve. Think he's decent. Hope your right I'm in a good mood after the Italian riviera sun and having re-ignited my love affair with apperetifs and the Garda Lake.

He is apparently in a retreat convalescing in Hawaii. Prepearing himself for a chip from the half way line as a comment on post-industrial capitalism.

Isn't he just diluting the shares so he can buy them back later? -
I'd go along with that, good comparison. Looks like Dalglish is looking to throw a lot of stuff into the box for Carroll with Suarez nibbling.

WASHINGTON -- A testy President Obama yesterday abruptly walked out of debt-limit talks at the White House, with no deal in sight as the Aug. 2 deadline to avoid a credit default rapidly approaches. Obama shoved back from the conference table and said, "We'll see you tomorrow," ending heated budget talks with congressional leaders, said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.). The talks are scheduled to resume today. The fourth consecutive day of negotiations had been complicated by new obstacles as battles broke out within Republican and Democratic ranks.
