Quite like your tinkering Fish..It's very pure and clean. There's also a good case to be made to have had a longer period of Zodding - meeting U.N. and solving one or two minor earth issues - all proper friendly like and putting out feelers for Kal-El (with help of intelligence agencies) who is really reluctant to reveal himself even when the threats start to come thick and fast...etc. He needs to really have his back against the wall (the fact that he's quickly into action and helping the army is bad storytelling and cheap propoganda). Ideally you want the hero with the whole world against him. The biggest thing they missed was S struggling with the twin ideas of saving what's left of the Krypton genome or saving earth.
