I know what you mean I was a bit 'resistant' on first viewing...Seen it 3 times now. Just immerse yourself in it....

My fav film of 2013 is 'Only god forgives' btw. A visionary chef de cuisine tour through vibrant colours (coded in red)...Lynchian lingering camera aesthetics and Cimino level tense - loaded set ups. A must see.

Fail to see how 'return to form' can be subjugated later into 'new criteria'.... Casino was his last great work. The rest you mention were pretty average overblown cheese balls. Departed I will concede he had to try and make a gay looking DiCaprio come across as 'hard' which is impossible...Shutter Island a poor mans Hitchcock...Gangs of New York was over staged pastiche...These are not 'brilliant films' by any stretch of the imagination. However I do agree that Raging Bull and Taxi driver will probably remain unmatched. From what I've heard the new one is going to be really good....As I said earlier 'a return to form'...
