I'd agree with that due to the fact we weren't playing a more attacking centre midfielder. Butt/Barton/Geremi are all solid centre mids, who do lots of tracking back. Were we to have an Arshavin type plyer, who likes to dictate play from the final 3rd, in either a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, I think you'd need a very disciplined holiding player. You are right about it maybe being a fashionable position though. Ath the minute, however, most big teams do play a tough tackling, holding midfielder though. We need two middle of the park midfielders really, ideally one with high creative, positional and pace components. Also Butt needs replacing, he's getting to the point that his excellent positonal sense can't make up for unwilling legs.
