  4. From BBC....Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton is set to leave the Tyneside club after contract negotiations broke down between the two parties. The 28-year-old, who has a year to run on his present contract, was unable to agree terms on a new deal. Magpies boss Alan Pardew has been quoted as wanting to retain Barton, who joined Newcastle from Manchester City in July 2007 for £5.8m. Huyton-born Barton has scored eight goals in 82 appearances at Newcastle. Barton has previously stated his happiness at Newcastle, and was even quoted as wanting to extend the contract in February of this year. "We had talks in January - Joey was prepared to take a drop in wages and we couldn't get anywhere," Barton's agent Willie McKay told BBC Newcastle. "I had a meeting this morning with [managing director] Derek [Llambias] and [football secretary] Lee [Charnley] and there was no offer on the table. "I've no idea what their thoughts were on the situation, they knew he was going to take less money. He's 28, which is a funny age, he needed a four-year contract which would see him through his best years. "He was happy with four years and less money. "He'll probably just run his contract out [at Newcastle], but we need to look for something for Joey in January, and that's where we are. 5. Skysports.com understands Newcastle will not be offering star midfielder Joey Barton a new contract at St James' Park. Barton is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Newcastle this summer and the club were thought to be keen on agreeing an extension with the midfield dynamo. However, after talks with the player's representatives Newcastle have decided not to offer a new deal to Barton and will allow the former Manchester City man see out his current contract. Barton's agent, Willie McKay has confirmed Newcastle have decided not to offer the 28-year-old a new deal after holding talks with club officials over his future. "I had a meeting with Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias and club secretary Lee Charnley and they have indicated Joey will not be offered a new contract," McKay told skysports.com. "Joey will continue to be a Newcastle player next season and then he will leave on a free transfer at the end of his contract. "Joey would have loved to have extended his stay at Newcastle, but unfortunately it is not to be. "Joey has loved his time at Newcastle and nothing will change his commitment for the club next season. "Obviously we will be monitoring the situation next January to try and find a new club for Joey as he can speak to clubs from abroad in January." The news comes as a major surprise as Barton has been Newcastle's stand-out performer this season with a number of eye-catching displays and he was named the fans' player of the season this term. News of Barton's availability is sure to alert a number of clubs at home and abroad with the likes of Hamburg and Olympiakos thought to be keeping tabs on his situation. Liverpool and Aston Villa are also thought to be keen on Barton and news of his contract situation could see them step up their interest in the player this summer.

  18. scholes strike rate similar, but in terms of ability, ginger nuts every time. another one for you. franz carr. fast as the wind but no end product! Not saying Robson was the best player ever or owt but I find it strange to see him mentioned in a list of most overrated players ever. Very strange, he gave everything in every game, he was forced to play injured with a shoulder brace on in the 86 world cup because we didnt have anyone close with his talent, fantastic box to box player imo
