The US immigration system is fucked. My brother in law has a green card and used to be a firefighter in Florida. He moved back to England and his green card automatically expired after he had been out of the country for 12months. Fast forward a few years and the whole family booked up to go to Disney Land. A couple of months before we flew we all applied for ESTAs/VISAs. His got declined because he had a green card. They wouldn't let him back in the country because it had expired and said it would take 3-6 months to formally rescind it. The poor fucker ended up staying at home for 2 weeks while we all went on holiday!
