I also agree the personnel is an issue, our youth staff have basically been Steve Stone and Peter Beardsley for a good period of our recent history. I know we have a scouting system in place for youth throughout Europe (brother in laws father is a scout) but I’ve no idea to what extent they were listened to in the past or how much has changed since Rafa took over (they do seem to look on the continent more mind). As you’ve mentioned though you’d think it’d be something that would really interest him especially with his reluctance to pay transfer fees.

I think that hits the nail on the head tbh. The club has definitely been plagued by short term thinking during his ownership, the “gambling” of going into seasons under strength and then panic buying in January if need be goes along with that imo. It is just something that always seemed like a no brainer, for a relatively small investment there’s so much potential for profit and first team improvement. It doesn’t have to be to the extent of Man City or Chelsea to pay off, I don’t imagine Southampton’s youth set up cost loads when compared to transfer fees.

Aye Defoe done well there but they’re incapable of context. He scored so often because their game plan was basically give the ball to Defoe and let him shoot, whereas at another club he gets a more normal level of chances. It’s been similar with Grabban this season, he scored far more than a striker of his ability usually would as everything was put through him. As I say Defoe did well and you still have to be good enough to put the chances away (shite like Joselu would squander them) but as you say they get really over the top about him because they constantly ignore context. It’s similar with Allardyce and them, they see him as an unbelievable manager despite him having them surviving by 1 point over a club that was completely imploding under McClaren. If we hadn’t have went down that season I highly doubt they’d see him as some quality manager.

I think the ridiculous way a lot of them reacted to our relegation and season in the Championship adds to it as well. They even continued this false arrogance when they were having yet another of the worst seasons in Premier League history, and despite the fact they survived by 1 point after taking 4 off us.
