Had similar last year. Just managed to sit down and unpack everything when the announcement came. Repacked all my stuff and weighed up the options (genuinely considered getting a flight back). Ended up getting what seemed like the last seat on a packed train to Sheffield. Plan was to get the 22:30 train back to Manchester from there. 10 minutes from Sheffield and an announcement comes that all trains to Manchester are cancelled. Had to get an Uber back home from Sheffield on the company dime. Let a lass share the trip because otherwise she'd be stranded, after suggesting she share the license plate, eta and all that.

Aye it becomes second nature. I also thought that I'd struggle to get back into the rhythm of whatever book I'm listening to, but it takes less than a minute and I'm back in the tension, levity or whatever.

To be honest I prefer reading actual books too, but use it because I rarely have time to sit and read at the minute. I listen to books as I do the groceries, or do school drop off/pick up.
