  1. Gerard looked a lot better last year when he was still a Liverpool player
  2. Lampard scoring twenty goals a season says a lot more about the Premier League than it does Lampard. I think the main problem with the England players is that they are thick. they certailny dont have the footballing intelligence to deal with the World Cup. Terry looks great for Chelsea, but compare his football brain to Carvalho - now that man is a footballer. Stevie G (who I hate, but I thought played well enough to avoid the worst of the criticism) is a match winner for Liverpool, when he is playing alongside Alonso Mascherano and Torres. As for Rooney - what the fuck happened there. Great players dominate the biggest tournaments. The jury has been out and has come back. Verdict, not got it at this level.
  3. Soros did an article on Project Syndicate the other day too on this. Some sobering reading on that site - http://www.project-syndicate.org/commentar...ubini26/English Lets just hope George Osbourne actually does have a clue what he is doing.
  4. I think that the lack of idealogical differences is a bit of a myth, and I think it is promoted by the right as cynicism helps undermine"do-gooders" and those with a progressive agenda. Apart from the early par of the New Labour the Tory Party has always been very succesful at defining the language political argument is coached in, which was a big part in the very efficient election winning machine they once were. I'm obviously not claiming New Labour or any of the current candidates has a strong traditional socialist agenda - that idealogical battle is over. The Labour years have brought in the minimum wage, improved funding and improvement to the NHS and education which are far too easy to decry. I am fairly certain the next few years will illustrate the idealogical differences all to clearly -though the Tory Party will be claiming every decision they make is 'unavoidable'. Damn those unavoidable decisions... Pensions increased and index linked Family tax credits up NHS protected from cuts Free cancer drugs fund Capital gains tax increased Bank levy put in place One million lifted out of paying tax Nissan grant Business incentives to open in the regions In just 7 weeks and off the top of my head That's very poor class wummage, even by your standards. You haven't even had the decency to google and paste irrelevant article. I'm hurt
  5. I think the problem is though that whilst Zep are still too many peoples favourite band, which I think leads to a bit of sterility. I also don't really mean you should listen to music to piss your parents off - I just think that music is at its most vibrant when it does rile people up and "scare the grown ups" I pretty much agree with this- I love the way the internet has opened up the way music is heard, and I'm aware how little of it I know. Again this I completely agree with, and to be honest I was trying to provoke a reaction. Your points are valid but I still think a musical revolution is long overdue. I was serious about the drug thing too. From Heroin -Psychadelics -Speed -ecstacy, when a new drug takes off music can really explode. Doesnt always work for he best mind Coke produced apalling boring self indulgent crap. (Mid seventies American rock -christ)
  6. George Soros, who I believe has some sort of track record warning of the dangers of too much austerity http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/currenc...-leave-EMU.html Its going to be interesting if the Tory mantra of reassuring the markets changes when the markets decide recession is a comin'
  7. All seems far too safe and adult friendly to me these days. I find the musical scene of today pretty dispiriting, everything seems so middle class. I quite enjoyed the Gorrilaz for example, but it sits a bit uneasy for me when the younguns are listening to middle aged mens music. The last two great youth musical uprisings terrified the grown ups, and thats the way it should be. Punk was powered by speed, Rave by ecstacy - maybe the kids of today need a new drug to kick something into life. To be honest I havent exactly got my finger on the pulse so I could be talking utter shite, however when that recent greatest band ever thing still had everybody bleating on about Led Zeppelin I found it so depressing. We fought the punk rock wars in the 70's to get rid of the same old shite and still it goes on. Kids shouldnt listen to their (grand)parents music -its wrong

  12. :icon_lol: Is that with reference to that bloke who flew in the BOB, with one arm and one leg who shot 22 of them down? Aye, I started calling Danny B it for a while. I.e. hasn't got a leg to stand on. He lost both legs in a plane crash I think and then was later allowed to fly again for the RAF. Also, was he the one with the dog called 'Nigger'? You are getting your WW2 stories woefully mixed up Alex. Nigger was the dog out of the Dambusters. I remember seeing the film one Sundayafternoon when i was about 16/17, It was when the NF was horribly popular and I was a young, politically energised punk rocker, a regular on the Anti Nazi League marches. Bizarre as it seems today the fight against the NF/BNp in those days was much more an actual physical battle than some safe intellectual debate. I had been to a RockAgainstRacism concert on the Saturday, which had been organised in the face of NF march through Liverpool(where I lived at the time) which had ended in a full scale riot/pitch battle. There I was feeling proud I was a footsoldier against the evil of the far right watching this with my parents the next afternoon. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, Canny film tho but. As I am showing my age, and embarressingly Douglas Bader related, I went to see Airplane when it first came out at the cinema, In those days there was no previews, viral marketing, clip shows - anything. You heard something was BIG IN AMERICA and REALLY FUNNY but you went in cold with no idea what it was actually about, Airplane was a huge film, massive build up, it arrived and i went to see it in a state of much excitement. there were about six of us in a packed out cinema - the film started in faux black and white= an obvious piss take of all the war films we had been brought up on, This bloke then waddled hilariously over to a Spitfire, took of his false legs and clambered into the cockpit to huge howls of laughter from me and my friends who understood the postmodern-satire we were witnessing, only for he lights in the cinema to go up and the collection for the Douglas Bader memorilal fund to take place, with every other member of the cinema audience looking at us like the scum we were. Even now the horror of that split second as I/we realised that wasn't the film, that was an appeal for the war heroes who had genuinely given everything, brings me out in a cold horrified sweat.
  13. Occupied, fucking hell don't you decimated?!?? Why do you think there is very few building that are pre 1945? They did Coventry, renovated the East End of London, had a go at Vickers, put a bit of a fireworks display on in Glasgow, bombed a scouse chippy and that was about it. It was no Dresden. Stan Boardmantastic
  14. Because he isn't good enough to get in the Chelsea team, and isnt showing it in training? played in 26 games for chelsea last season despite being injured for a lot of the season, made a huge difference to their run in that ended with them winning the title and is one of the few players in the england squad who has regularly brought his club form to the international game To be honest I was only trying to wind the Fishy one up. Theres no need to spoil my fun with reasoned argument
  15. Because he isn't good enough to get in the Chelsea team, and isnt showing it in training?
  16. Playing some nice attacking football, but not conforming to the stereotype of African headless chicken defending. They look organised and inventive. Not so sure I'd want to meet them rather than the Germans... I was thinking the same thing, I think we would be a better bet against the Krauts. It would be fantastic to see them go out at this stage though
  17. Joe Cole seems a much better player for not actually playing. I'm sure if he gets on the pitch hwe will manage to sink to the level of the rest of them. I've become pretty ambivelent about the result. I'm sure if England win I will get into it, but at the moment the only effect England are having on me is spoiling the rest of the tournament. I hate most of the players so much I would take quite a lot of pleasure from watching them fail
  18. Proud I would imagine. Sadly that made me
  19. http://sport.stv.tv/fifa-world-cup/matches...-africa-878776/ Better quality stream for me
  20. Aye it's a brilliant move, 'don't worry guys, we're not increasing NI contributions, but we are going to increase the price of most of what you buy by 2.1%', cheers Gideon. 2.1% rise says it all really. Sorry, have you got a more accurate figure? Think about what I said. 20 - 17.5 = 2.1 Oh dear, let me explain it to you in terms you might understand. If you buy £100 of sweets exc. VAT at 17.5% you pay £117.50 Now, if you buy £100 of sweets exc. VAT under the Tories you pay £120 Now, be a good lad and tell me by how much has the price of your sweeties increased? 2.5% ...and how much did you say? I give up. You pay £2.50 more / the £120 you pay is 2.083% increase, or 2.1% as said. If it was a 2.5% increase over the £117.50 you were spending that would be £120.44 Fwiw I think its a good idea. I thought labours idea of reducing the VAT to 15% was a fucking stupid idea. What good did that do other than create an even bigger whole in the governments budget? Who actually went out and thought "oh my, I can save a couple of quid on that £100 purchase so I'll buy it now". Same as this increase, you'll hardly notice it but in the grand scheme it makes a massive difference to the pot. What isn't mentioned is the cost to business of changing over. I'm telling you it's a right pain in the arse. To be fair to Labour the 15% was pretty useful for a lot of the retail industry rather than the consumer -they were still charging 4.99 inc vat - but werent passing it on
  21. ...and a £250 rise per year for those below. Its nice to see the back of Labour and have sensible government in charge. Just when you thought the level of intellectual discussion on the Tory side couldn't get any lower.......
