Great result- remarkably comfortable performance. I really wish I was confident we could keep this unit together over the summer and add some quality - we aren't far off being a solid top 8 team. I fear the summer will be brutal though

Just out of interest how long are you going to keep blaming Shepherd for Ashley running the club like Netto Ad infinitum it appears Sponge Or until he isn't buying top players when the club can afford them That doesn't really answer my question.

I never saw Best and I never saw Pele. One thing I can say is the game was no where near as competitive as it is now, no where near as quick, and I regard him as the greatest out and out goalscorer there's ever been. One player who often gets over looked when talking about the greatest players ever is Gerd Muller, he had a better scoring record than any of them at every level. Probably cos he's kraut like, but I've heard Beckenbauer say Muller made Bayern Munich the club they are today on his own. It may not have been as competitive, speed wise when Best played, but it was lot tougher. Best took treatment week in week out that was criminal compared to the way now, the things defenders could get away with then were unbelievable, but he was hard as nails. He played on shit heap pitches with a big heavy ball, but he could still do things that any player now would dream of. It was said by everybody who played with him and against him he wasnt just the best player in the league, he was the best player in every position in the league - I just wish there was more film of him about

Happy 60th birthday Kevin Keegan
spongebob toonpants replied to Dr Kenneth Noisewater's topic in Newcastle Forum
Well said Kenneth -I'm not ashamed to say I love him too, and, as always, will raise a glass in his name tonight -
I would put him behind George Best and Maradona, but I would say he is by far the most exciting player I have watched since the TV explosion of the game. When he played at Barcelona he was absolutely unbelievable.

Ahhh but Barnard didn't design forward facing exhausts. The problem with the F92 I seem to remember was pitch sensitivity. Wasn't this the car that Alesi had to literally drag round behind him? Literally?

Really interesting stuff there. Fascinating to see where this is going to lead - not just Egypt but the whole of the middle east. What it means for Israel is anybodies guess. I still don't know if what we are seeing here is a popular uprising or a military coup, I'm relieved and impressed by the lack of violence so far, I hope it stays that way obviously.

If you had kids you would realise you are desperate to get shot of the little parasites by the time they are 12 anyway

They are going primarily for the football, not the money or fame. If my boy was good enough I would send him in a heartbeat

With the (very notable) exception of Shay Given, I will give the Lardash credit for always getting top dollar when he flogs off our best players. Its just a pity the only thing it benefits is the balance sheet

By ambition I don't mean spunking tens of millions of their own money though, just running a club that had been turned into one of the top revenue generators in the world in a way that would take it forward. We don't know how bad the debt was when he took over, or what might have happened but to blame Shepherd for the state we are in now is ridiculous. When Ashley took over he paid off the debt in cash- as we were told time and time again. Of course it is impossible to know how much truth we have ever been told about the state of the finances by Ashley, he has lied from the minute he took over, the noises that come from the club have been nothing but misinformation and downright bollocks from the get go. Without wanting to defend Shepherd particularly he isn't the one who sanctioned the contracts for Viduka, Smith, Barton, Geremi, Capaca, Rozenhal, Beye, Jonas, Colo, Xisco, Gonzalez, and it wasn't him that sacked and therefore had to pay for the contracts of Allardyce and Keegan within acouple of months of each other. I'm pretty sure Shepherd didn't have Wise on the payroll at £1m a year either. To blame anybody but Ashley is ridiculous, and if he had any idea about how to run a club well we wouldn't be signing Shefki Kuqi whilst being £49 million up on transfers This is the one thing in this debate that boils my piss. He paid off the existing debts by creating new debts. The club owes more money now than it ever did under the last regime. Yet this line about him paying off the debts’ gets reeled out time and time again. That aside I agree with your view. Ashley should be judged on his own actions, not those of the previous regime. He chose to buy the club. He chose not to undertake due diligence. He chose to force Keegan out. He chose to appoint Wise, JFK and Lambias, piss Shearer around, sack Hughton, sell Carroll, rename the ground, deface the roof, put the club for sale, take it off the market, put it up sale again, take it off the market again..... he chose to take on the responsibility and he’s accountable for the state of the club now. I wasn't claiming he was white knight by paying off the debts, or as you more accurately point out loaning the club the money so the debt was transferred to him, I was trying to show the stupidity of blaming the shepherd debt legacy for the place we are now.
