Sam Allardyce has revealed fears about the lack of strength in depth in his Newcastle squad. Allardyce hit the ground running in the transfer market when he first joined Newcastle as he successfully brought in Mark Viduka, Joey Barton, David Rozehnal and Geremi. However, the St James' Park manager has recently admitted his transfer disappointments as he looks to bolster his squad ahead of the 11th August kick-off, away at his former club Bolton. Allardyce has now reiterated his frustrations and says that he is increasingly keen to find defensive reinforcements as he continues to miss out on a number of top targets. "It's a necessity. I'm not trying to sign players for players' sake," said Allardyce. "I'm not, at the moment, comfortable with the strength in depth of the squad, and that needs addressing, particularly in the defensive area, which I have said many, many times now. "That's not saying that young Peter Ramage and Paul Huntington and, of course, David Edgar are not doing a good job. Hopefully they will have grown with their experience last year and will play a major part this year. "But in saying all that, I want a top, experienced defender to come in, if not one, perhaps two or it might even be three. "I want to make sure we have got enough cover and experience to cope with the particular weakness for Newcastle United over the last two seasons, and that's conceding too many goals." Allardyce, though, says he will not let his desperation to find defensive recruits lead him to panic buying. "We have bid for many players recently and unfortunately at the moment, have not clinched a deal in any shape or form," Allardyce added. "Of course, there's no saying that some of the deals we have been involved with might not resurrect themselves later on in the season, but every manager at this time is under a sense of urgency. "The trick is not to let that change into panic. The players available at the moment are getting fewer and farther between with the sort of quality we are looking for."

Deco has reiterated his desire to stay at Barcelona but admits that if the club tell him that he is not needed then he will seek a transfer. The Portuguese international spoke out after being left out of the starting line-up in Barca's 11 versus 11 training match on Tuesday. His omission sparked debate in the Catalan media as a lot has been read into Frank Rijkaard's choice for the two teams in the match. "I have a contract until 2010 and nobody has said anything to me, therefore I think that they count on me. I like it here. But if they do not want me to stay then that is there choice," Deco said. Barca are continuing their pre-season preparations in Scotland but speculation is rife over which players will be off-loaded following the arrival of four new stars. Deco has been subject of interest from Internazionale and Newcastle United but he is only focusing on helping Barcelona reclaim their title and is knows Rijkaard has yet to finalise his squad. "He will now try and make a great team from these players. Everyone wants to make this a great team," the 29-year-old explained. "The team is not finalised yet. The coach is trying to create his team and I have to continue working hard." Reflecting on harsh criticism during last season that included reports that he was at the centre of the controversy behind the scenes, Deco explained that he knew the analysis would start when the team missed out on the title. Deco said: "When you do not win something then things like that always happen. We have had some incredible years, but then last season we failed. "Everything that was said was expected and we were ready for it. This season I think we will be going for all the trophies as the club has brought some great new players."

Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has revealed that he has been inundated with offers for 18-year-old striker Andy Carroll. The youngster made his debut in the Uefa Cup match against Palermo last year and he signed a long-term deal in April 2007. With new striker Mark Viduka away on international duty Carroll has started both of Newcastle's pre-season fixtures. However, Carroll could well find Premier League starts hard to come by next season as The Magpies now have a healthy front-line in Viduka, Michael Owen, Obafemi Martins, Albert Luque and Shola Ameobi. Allardyce explained that the starlet could be sent out on loan but the decision would be in the player's best interest. "I have heard so much about Andy from other managers because they keep ringing up and asking for him on loan, which rather excited me about the potential of the young man," Allardyce said. "There is very good potential there. Whether it's going to be in key areas in the Premier League this year, I'll decide that further down the line as the season comes closer. "He can play a part now because Mark Viduka is away, but when Mark comes back, I will have a full assessment and there might be the possibility that one of those managers gets lucky. "I may loan him out if I feel that's the right thing for Andy and the right thing for us. "Or if he carries on improving and showing the sort of potential he's got, I might decide to keep him here and use him when I feel necessary to give him some Premier League experience."

Newcastle United striker Michael Owen is confident of having a productive season for The Magpies. Injury has plagued the England international's tenure at St James' Park, limiting him to just 13 Premier League starts in two years. Owen is now fit and healthy after missing the whole of last season with the knee injury suffered at the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany. The former Real Madrid and Liverpool ace is hoping his bad luck is firmly behind him and that fans can look forward to a season of goals. "I don't want any bad injuries this year and if I can stay fit and healthy then I'm sure I'll score a few goals," he told Sky Sports News. "I don't feel any different now. I feel like I did before. "It's been a disappointing year, especially last year. "I want to play well this year, I want to score goals and I want to make people happy. "If I'm fit and healthy I think everyone knows I'll score goals. "I'm feeling sharp and strong at the minute. I'm confident it'll be a good season. "If the manager adds a defender or two to the squad then I think we'll be covered in every position and have a good team." Meanwhile, Owen is remaining tight-lipped on his chances of captaining Newcastle this season. New boss Sam Allardyce is yet to name Scott Parker's successor and Owen has been tipped to win the armband. "I was asked about it the other day. I think there are plenty of good candidates in our squad already," he continued. "It would be an honour to be asked, but we'll wait to see who the manager is going to ask. "There are plenty of other candidates so we'll wait on that one." Owen is closing in on a century of caps for England and the 27-year-old would love to achieve three figures for his country. "It's everyone's dream to play for their country. To play 82 times, it's a great achievement. "If I didn't have this injury or that injury I might have got to 100 caps already."

Geremi has admitted he did not hesitate in signing for Newcastle because of the 'huge ambition' at the club. The versatile Cameroon international brought to an end four years on the fringes at Chelsea by moving to St James' Park at the beginning of July and the 28-year-old says that it did not require too much thought to become Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce's fourth signing. "As soon as I heard that Newcastle were interested, I did not have to think for too long," Geremi told the club's official website. "I just said yes straight away because it's a big club with huge ambition and amazing fans. "I have always appreciated the Newcastle fans whenever I have played at St James' Park. "The fans are the 12th man and when you see them, they are always there pushing you, which is good for the player." Geremi, who spent a season on loan from Real Madrid at Middlesbrough prior to his £7million move to Stamford Bridge in 2003, joins Mark Viduka, Joey Barton and David Rozehnal as Newcastle summer recruits. Allardyce is expected to hand Geremi his debut in Saturday's pre-season friendly with Carlisle and the player is looking forward to his opportunity. "It's a big challenge for me and I hope to help the team achieve something because I know Newcastle have not won anything for a lot of years now," Geremi added. "The manager will decide if I play in midfield or defence, but the most important thing is to be part of the team, and I'm looking forward to that.

Newcastle have been ordered to pay Le Havre compensation for Charles N'Zogbia. The attacking midfielder joined The Magpies from Le Havre in 2004 but the two clubs have been locked in a dispute ever since. Le Havre claim N'Zogbia had signed an education contract with them as a teenager and was therefore not free to sign for Newcastle. The case went to Fifa's Dispute Resolution Chamber, who ruled that Newcastle could keep the young Frenchman. Le Havre have now taken the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and have been rewarded with compensation from both Newcastle and N'Zogbia. The player must pay the Ligue 2 club €650,000 (£440,000), while Newcastle must pay €300,000 (£200,000). Le Havre general manager Alain Belsoeur was pleased with the outcome as it helps protect the club's education centre. "Now when there is a violation of a contractual commitment, there will be reparation," he told the French press. "That will force the predators to step back. We will be able to raise our heads high again and go back to our education work."

Ludovic Giuly has completed his move from Barcelona to Roma. The Catalan giants accepted an offer of £2.2million over the weekend and Giuly travelled to Italy on Monday to finalise the transfer. He has now passed a medical and agreed terms on a lucrative three-year deal. Giuly had been linked with a return to former club Monaco, as well as several other top European clubs, but he had his heart set on Roma. "He refused offers from six other clubs who were willing to spend up to £6million for his services, but he chose Roma," Ernesto Bronzetti, who acted as mediator in the deal, told Rete Sport. "Last night the difference between the request and the offer was down to £210,000. I opted to give up on my fee to allow the player to sign. "Giuly had been mentioned as a technical counterpart when Barcelona were interested in Chivu. After the negotiations failed I immediately offered the Frenchman to Roma."

Michael Owen admits he is desperate to put his injury nightmares behind him and to prove the critics wrong. Injury has restricted the Newcastle striker to only 14 first-team appearances since his £17million move from Real Madrid in 2005 and some have suggested he has become injury prone. Owen missed the majority of last season after damaging his anterior cruciate knee ligament while on England duty in the 2006 World Cup. However, having rediscovered his fitness, the 27-year-old is now more focused than ever to show he still has the top-level goalscoring touch. "It's never been a goal of mine before to stay fit, but I suppose after these last two years, I want to play a full season," Owen told Newcastle's official website. "I don't consider myself injury prone. I have played a lot of games throughout my career for club and country and it's frustrating that my injuries have happened at Newcastle. "I'm definitely going into this season as strong as I have been for a long, long time and I don't envisage any problems. "If I'm fit, everyone knows I will score goals. I have done that all my life." Owen has scored seven goals in 13 starts for Newcastle and he found the back of the net for the first time in a year with his strike in England's 3-0 European Championship qualifier victory over Estonia in June.
