Newcastle new boy Mark Viduka has accused old club Middlesbrough of not doing enough to keep him at The Riverside. Viduka joined Newcastle on a free transfer earlier this summer after seeing out his contract at Middlesbrough. The Australian international, who made his Newcastle debut against Bolton on Saturday, admits he was surprised Middlesbrough did not try harder to keep hold of him. "To be honest at the time I was surprised. Most people were, including other players, that there was no offer made earlier," Viduka told the Sunday Mirror. "It is disappointing when you have played for a club and you want to do well and it comes to a point where you don't know if you are staying or going with six months of your contract left. "You are free at the end of the contract and you have to start thinking of your future. "Middlesbrough do not look after you in that sense. They never got around to it. The club gets a lot of situations like that. It happened with Bolo Zenden and then me - and it could be Mark Schwarzer below next." Viduka also shrugged off claims from Middlesbrough chief executive Keith Lamb that the former Leeds striker was only prolific in the final six months of the three year contract. "He had a lot of pressure on him and he wanted to react. I can't comment on what Keith Lamb says," added Viduka. "I gave everything in every game. Some games I didn't play well, some I did. If I didn't play well I wouldn't have had any clubs after me. "I would like to think I played well for Boro. Some footballers go unappreciated but that is a different story."

Sam Allardyce has hit back at Bolton chairman Phil Gartside after being left upset by his former colleague's criticism of his reign at The Reebok Stadium. Gartside launching a scathing attack on Allardyce just before Saturday's clash between Newcastle and Bolton. Allardyce had the last laugh as his Newcastle side beat his old club 3-1 on the opening day of the season. Allardyce, who spent eight years at Bolton before leaving at the back end of last season, admitted he was disappointed by Gartside's attack. "The Bolton chairman has been saying a lot about me and I am very disappointed with the comments he has made," said Allardyce. "But actions speak louder than words. We played them off the park and won the game. "That answers everything for me, rather than get into a fight. "I would rather look forward than back. I have moved on and left Bolton in the best state it has ever been in. "I do not understand his (Gartside's) thinking. He believes I have done certain things which I have not. "He really should not. I have given them a great platform so I do not know why he is so critical of me."

Elano is a great player has all the attributes to be a top prem player. Man City,in my opinion, can get into the Uefa Cup this season, and as for West Ham well theres only one way down and there is only one Championship

Newcastle forward Albert Luque has been linked with Levante and Feyenoord. The Spaniard has not been able to establish himself at St James' Park since his £9.5million move from Deportivo La Coruna in 2005. He has shown glimpses of some better form in pre-season, but is again unlikely to play a major role this term as the arrivals of Mark Viduka and Alan Smith have increased competition for places. A number of clubs are understood to want Luque on loan, and his father and agent claims he is on the verge of striking a deal with Levante. "I believe that we will soon be in Valencia," Rafael Luque told Las Provincias. "I have attended some meetings this week and I expect a solution." Feyenoord have also been credited with an interest in Luque, and the player is keen to assess all his options. "I desire to leave England," Luque is quoted as saying in Las Provincias.

Damien Duff feels Sam Allardyce has already had a positive influence at Newcastle. Allardyce has made seven signings since being appointed Magpies boss at the start of the summer, bringing in three defenders, two strikers, midfielder Joey Barton and the versatile Geremi. Duff, who is expected to be sidelined until November with a foot injury, believes Allardyce's signings have been well balanced and is confident Newcastle will improve on last season's 13th place. "It's what the club needed, I think from top to bottom, a fresh start," Duff said on Sky Sports News. "Sam's come in and I think we'll definitely improve from last year, we have to. "He's no mug and he knows what the club needs. He's done it at both ends." Duff also admits it was important for Newcastle to keep hold of Michael Owen, who missed virtually all of last season through injury and was then linked with a move away in the summer. "He's England's best striker in my view and now we just need to get him back fit and scoring goals," said Duff.

ALAN Smith believes he is a stronger player both mentally and physically after bouncing back from his career-threatening injury and says his best years are still to come. The 26-year-old dislocated his ankle and broke his leg during an FA Cup tie at Anfield in early 2006, but battled back to play his part in Man Utd's Premiership triumph last season. And, having completed a move to Tyneside from Old Trafford last week, the England star says he cannot wait for the season to get started with his horror injury now all but a distant memory. "When I looked down, the leg was lying one way and my ankle was pointing towards Hong Kong, so I knew I was in serious trouble," said the player who marked his Toon debut with the only goal against Sampdoria on Sunday. "But the injury is done and dusted and everything is fine now. "I played plenty of reserve-team games last season and then in the first team, and got through pre-season training with Manchester United, so I am ready and fully recovered. "I just cannot wait for the season to start properly now. "It has done a lot for my mental toughness, of course it has. A lot of people questioned if I would be able to come back from that injury, and I have proved that they were wrong to say that." After signing, Smith revealed to Newcastle World TV that as soon as he had spoken to Magpies manager Sam Allardyce he was sold on a move to St.James'. And the former Leeds forward is delighted to have joined the Big Sam revolution at Gallowgate. "I am just glad to be playing for a manager who really wanted me," he added. "I know what this club wants to achieve, and he wants me to be a big part of what he wants to do here. "I am here with my best years in front of me and that is why it was a big decision. "A lot of last season I was out with injury and I wanted to come somewhere that I could come and play the full season and now I'm raring to go."

Sam Allardyce has defended Newcastle's decision to block Kieron Dyer's move to West Ham. Dyer had been on the point of moving to Upton Park after the clubs agreed a fee of £5million up front plus a further £1million depending on appearances. But Newcastle then decided they had under-valued the England man and demanded a further £2million, prompting Alan Curbishley to call the deal off. The Hammers are still reportedly keen to sign Dyer, but boss Allardyce says he will remain a Newcastle player until the Londoners stump up the additional £2m. "In the end, we decided he was under-valued. We escalated the valuation to what we thought was realistic and West Ham did not want to roll with it," explained Allardyce. "Kieron is back with us, a top player with a squad who are growing. "Will it be difficult for Kieron? It's life, isn't it? He has got a contract. You sign it. The length of the contract means you are employed by an employer, something happens, it doesn't work, you come back and get on with it. "If anything else happens in terms of West Ham increasing their offer, then great. If they don't then clearly they don't value him as highly as we do."

MAGPIES midfield star Geremi says he is ready to captain Newcastle United at Bolton this weekend after admitting it was an "honour" to skipper the Geordies in their last two games. The Cameroon international wore the armband at Hull on Wednesday before leading the Magpies to victory in their final pre-season fixture against Sampdoria on Sunday. And it now looks likely that the 28-year-old will again lead out the black and whites at the Reebok Stadium in Saturday's season-opener, a responsibility the former Chelsea ace admits he is relishing. "It is a huge honour to captain a big club like Newcastle United, even for just one game," he said. "But more importantly against Sampdoria, it was very important to win the game going into next week's game at Bolton. "Of course I would like the job on a full-time basis and I feel I have the qualities to do that. "It is important as a captain to lead the team inside and outside the dressing room and on and off the field. "It is a full-time position and you have to take responsibility in all areas. I have done it for my country and I could do it here. "It wouldn't be a big problem for me to do the job as captain. "But the decision will be the manager's decision and his alone." United new boys Alan Smith and Mark Viduka both made their Toon bows against the Serie A side, and Geremi says players of their quality are key if the club is to realise its undoubted potential. "I was pleased with them both," he told the Evening Chronicle. "You need great players like those two on your side if you want to do well. "We have big ambitions this year and the aim is to club together very quickly."
