Newcastle United boss Sam Allardyce is confident Michael Owen is on course to make an ahead of schedule return from injury. A torn thigh muscle sustained while on international duty had threatened to sideline the England man for six weeks. But Allardyce is confident the injury is not as serious as first feared and that his chief goalscorer will be back before Christmas. "We feel we have speeded up the process and it's going to be a little quicker than we first thought so that's really good news," Allardyce told the club's official website. "We will only bring him back when he is 100 per cent and will not rush him. "But we think it's going to be a lot less than six weeks." Meanwhile, Nicky Butt remains hopeful that his form this season will be enough to earn him fresh terms at St James' Park. The 31-year-old's contract expires at the end of the season and having won over an initially sceptical Toon faithful, he is keen to remain in the North East. "When a new manager comes in you have to prove yourself no matter what age you are and no matter how much you've done," Butt added. "I think I have done that but hopefully the team will improve in the coming weeks because that's the most important thing. "I want to stay here but that (contract talks) is ongoing at the moment and if that happens that's all well and good."

Fuck off he isn't even worth half of that

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce could be handed a fitness tonic ahead of Saturday's trip to Blackburn. The beleaguered Toon chief has struggled to win over an expectant St James' Park faithful since being appointed in the summer. Allardyce has been the subject of speculation with regards his future in the post, with Saturday's miserable home defeat to Liverpool culminating in him talking of hitting 'rock bottom'. However, the former Bolton boss is refusing to be downbeat as he sees the return of Abdoulaye Faye as being key to stiffening up a defence that has been poor in recent weeks. "We will see how he goes this week but we are hoping we may get Abdoulaye back for the weekend," he said. "He is a big player for us in defence. He is powerful in the air and has the presence we need." Allardyce believes he should not be judged until he has key summer signings fully fit and firing on all cylinders. He added: "There are still some players, like Mark Viduka and Joey Barton, who have not had a lot of games to pick up their sharpness. We have got to keep working at that."

Brazilian defender Claudio Cacapa has set his sights on winning silverware with Newcastle. Cacapa moved to St James' Park from Lyon in August and he is keen to replicate the success he enjoyed with the French champions. Newcastle have endured a disappointing season and the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at the weekend has heaped pressure on under-fire manager Sam Allardyce. However, Cacapa - who was substituted after 18 minutes of the Magpies' 4-1 home defeat to Portsmouth at the start of November - believes the St James' Park faithful deserve success. "I won some titles in France and I hope it will be the same here," Cacapa told French media. "The fans deserve it. There are 50,000 for each match." Cacapa also insists he is keen to see out his contract at Newcastle, despite an unsettled start to his time in England. "I am not a mercenary," he added. "I am keen to stay here for three years. I want to enter the club's history. "I made a decision to leave Lyon and I have no regret. Newcastle have trusted me."

Sam Allardyce says Newcastle United have hit 'rock-bottom' after a 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool. The Magpies conceded four against Portsmouth in their previous game at St James' Park and were again woeful in front of their own supporters. Once Steven Gerrard fired Liverpool into a 28th minute lead, Newcastle wilted and could have conceded more but for the profligate finishing of Fernando Torres. The home fans jeered the team at half-time, and again at the final whistle, to put the pressure on Allardyce in his first season on Tyneside. The former Bolton boss concedes he is in an unusual situation and has called on his players to 'stick together'. "I have never quite found myself in this predicament before to be honest with you," admitted Allardyce. "But I have dealt with some difficult situations and this one is a good challenge. "You roll your sleeves up and you get on with your job. You know what's right and you know what's wrong and you get it put right. "Hopefully, that starts at Blackburn Rovers next week. "We have hit rock-bottom at the minute and we have got to get ourselves out of it. "There's only us who can do it by sticking together and trying to get as many players fit as we possibly can and showing a lot more grit and determination to acquire that result."

Obafemi Martins says there is 'no point' in Newcastle United losing faith in manager Sam Allardyce. Though Allardyce only took over at St James' Park in the summer, there has already been speculation about his future after an indifferent start to the season. But Magpies striker Martins is adamant that the former Bolton boss should be afforded the time to implement his plan on Tyneside. "Sam does things a little bit differently to other managers and we have had to get used to that," Martins told the Daily Express. "But it's all good. All of the players are happy under Sam and we all like the way he does things. "People have to give him time, maybe two or three years. There is no point losing faith in Sam because he will bring the best out of this team if he stays." Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has also offered his support to Allardyce, insisting the players are fully behind the manager. Barton told The Guardian: "We lost two games and then drew at Sunderland and everyone is saying Sam is under pressure. It's laughable. "That is the way British society has gone, there is a desire to see heads roll. Brits should have their own mind, but we don't. "We let newspapers run amok and decide what we think. More fool you if you believe everything you read. "All the players are behind Sam. He's a top manager and will do well at Newcastle."

He should fuck of, hes fat and useless and hasn't got a clue about management

I like Gerrard, you cant blame him for what happened to England. Just a disgrace to boo him for that,, but like others have said in this thread i would boo him for things that have happened in the game against us but not for something that has happened and hasn't been his fault.

Martin O'Neill says he has no interest in replacing Steve McClaren as coach of England. The Aston Villa manager had been put forward as the ideal candidate to take over the national team following the failure to qualify for Euro 2008. The former Northern Ireland international was a contender to replace Sven Goran Eriksson in 2006 before McClaren was handed the reins. But O'Neill has revealed that he will not be in the running for the role this time around as he is fully committed to Villa. "I'm very uncomfortable and very uneasy about doing interviews on hypothetical cases," said O'Neill on Sky Sports News. "I can understand how this has arisen. Obviously I was on the short list last time, I was interviewed for the job and I didn't get the job, but I suppose my name would occur again. "No one has contacted me - that's obvious. I wouldn't expect anybody to so early or to even remotely think about it. "I have a commitment here to this football club. Last time I didn't have a commitment, I was not in club management for other reasons anyway. "But when the opportunity come up to be interviewed for England at that time it was great, I was absolutely flattered and I went to the interview and obviously didn't do well enough. "Now, you have to ask yourself the question, why would you be asked back again? "More importantly, I am absolutely committed to this. I set out 14, 16 months ago to this job and I know that no obstacles are in the way. "This is what I wanted to do. This job is far, far from complete and I feel as if I am just starting and I feel as if I am getting things together. "I want to do this job and that really should end it."

Newcastle v Liverpool 12.30pm, Saturday, Sky Sports 1 I have a feeling Sam Allardyce will have been cursing the international break. Not only has he lost Michael Owen to injury again, but it has meant an awful long time dwelling on their last game at St James' Park - that 4-1 defeat to Portsmouth. It might well have been a freak result but I am sure they would have wanted the chance to get it out of their system as soon as possible. Whether they can or not, I am not sure, because it seems to be something embedded in the club. They seem to be back where they were a couple of years ago - shocking individual mistakes undermining everything they try and do. I don't know what it is about Newcastle, but perfectly solid, reliable, dependable defenders with good records at their previous clubs go there and turn to jelly. Claudio Cacapa is the latest one and you do wonder what Sam Allardyce can do to stop it. If anyone can, it will be him because he had a very good defensive record at Bolton. It was never going to happen overnight, but I did expect some improvement by this stage. In fact, it looks like after a decent start, things have taken a downward turn. The new signings, like Joey Barton, haven't made an impact and then, after all the time he's been out, they go and lose Michael Owen again. Sam must be seething. Was Austria really a game he needed to be playing? After all his injury problems? I don't think so. What it does mean is another chance for Obafemi Martins, but you must wonder how he is feeling. Last season he was their main man, this season he is shunted down the pecking order and as soon as Owen gets injured his manager tells him it's time to show us how good he is! But they will need him to do that, whatever he feels about it. They might not have got it completely right but Liverpool are still unbeaten this season. They have probably drawn too many games though, which is probably why Rafa Benitez is still getting stick from all corners! He will point to results and that unbeaten start, but the other side of the coin is, they are already six points off the leaders - in a season when plenty of people were expecting them to be challenging for the league. For me he does chop and change too much and is perhaps a little too cautious in his selections, when really it's simple. You play the strongest team available when you can - the Portsmouth game was a classic example. Over the course of the season, dropping two points here and there will soon add up. For instance, Fernando Torres did not play for Spain in midweek, so should be raring to go. He is better than anything else they've got in attack, so he has to start on Sunday. But big Peter Crouch played 90 minutes on a boggy pitch on Wednesday, so Rafa will probably pick him because he's fresh! The Champions League is coming up next week as well, so it is anybody's guess who gets the nod - particularly in attack. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Daniel Agger come straight back into that central defence because Sami Hyypia hasn't had the best of times. Agger was looking pretty solid before he got injured. And although he hasn't been what you'd call poor, even Jamie Carragher has not been up to his usual high standards. I think that could be vital here as well. These two sides have served up some great games for us on Sky Sports down the years but I can't see this being the same. Newcastle will be a little nervy, Liverpool are not that open anymore and neither side is exactly flying right now. Le Tiss predicts AWAY WIN - I know Newcastle are decent at home but I just have a gut feeling that Liverpool will nick this. Of course that means Rafa sending out his strongest side, which is no means a dead cert, but I think he has to here. They need a good result heading into the Champions League and they can't afford to lose any more ground. If they are positive I can see them winning by the only goal. Matt's Main Man FERNANDO TORRES - It's hard to pick anyone from the Liverpool squad, because they could just as easily not be playing! But Torres is their most dangerous forward and is a class above the other strikers Rafa has on his books. It must be hard for the lad coming from Atletico Madrid where he was the main man, to Anfield where he seems to be just another striker. It's up to Rafa to gauge how he handles that, but if he plays Liverpool are a real threat.

What are the chances of that being him?
