I think it only goes so far though, it may encourage more black applicants to apply but they still have to get the job on merit, same as everyone else. But yes, positive discrimination can be a usefull tool in encouraging more people to apply for jobs.

Getting back ontrack though, I would say that a black man with equal ambition to his white counterpart can get to where he wants to be in todays society. Yes, racism does exist, it always will, in one form or another, I dislike ginger people, dont know why, I would never want to kill or hold back a ginge for purely being ginge though. Does that make me racist ? Do I discriminate against gingers?

Well, if you kill everyone who sleeps with your wife you might struggle to find many. If you kill everyone you see because they are black then its not really a motive, they have not done anything to or against you. However, if all black people had slept with your wife and you could prove it... The crime itself is equally condemnable, the motive only exists in one example you gave.

It all depends if it was racially motivated or not. Had it been a white boy killed by blacks for purely being white, or even a white boy killed by racists for having black mates etc then yes, equally as disgusting. If it was a fight over other reasons and somebody had stabbed him then yes, still disgusting. The handling by the police was the disgusting thing in that case which made it even worse. Nobody deserves to be killed in a fight, the people who do such things need putting away, its a crime there is no justification for. But its a good question, if he was white would the media have treat the cas e the same?

Thats one example of racially motivated crime that was genuine, in that case it was disgusting and proves that racism is still about in society. I was speaking more generally and not about that incident, if you want to discuss Stephen lawrence then I am sure most would agree it was very wrong and handled very badly. Im not claiming racism doesnt exist, just putting a viewpoint across that it is easy for a racist incident to be claimed when in fact it may not have been racist at all. It doesnt add much weight to the stats argument either.

I get paid less than people doing the same job as me, they are further up the scale for having more responsibility, or by merely being older, not many of the older black and ethnic minority groups had the chances that the younger ones do when they were young themselves, look at those stats in 20 years or so andthey will paint a better picture

Heres an example of positive discrimination.... I go out on a weekend, get into a fight, get beat, have a black eye etc... the police dont do anything. A black or ethnic minority person does the same, gets into a fight, police tell them they cant do anything, then they go to the papers, middle page spread of a man with a black eye claiming a racist attack and using the mass media and positive discrimination to help racism on a bit. Makes sense really, why get rid of something that can help you on in life?

The statistics on employment dont hold any weight, there are bound to be less ethnic minorites than whites in jobs here, there are less of them. The figures on who is more likely to be arrested, expelled from school etc... Can you put that down to racism alone? Or is there an underlying culture in some minorites that encourages crime? For example religous fantacism. And what do they mean by black? asian, muslim ? black britains? Black people are not an ethnic minority unless they choose to belong to an ethnic minority group. Flawed statistics imo. Yes, racism does exist, it always will, some parts of our culture still promote it. I do not think that a black person with ambition is massively worse off than a white man with the same. Thats equal rights.

celicas are'nt all that good on fuel, they take a heavy foot to get them going quick aswell. mx5 is a good choice but again expensive. Id probably go for a turbo diesel leon if I wanted to be sensible, if not then a celica 140, will cost about the same to run as your current car but you can have lots of fun in them too. My mother is an approved social worker who interviews suicide patients and also deals with mentally ill offenders in the community etc... She gets called out all of the time for legit and failed suicide attempts, also interviews the failed attempts and usually ends up forwarding them to the samaritans or similar. The genuine suicides do not mess about, they make sure they die. Usually nothing can be done to stop them. I understand your views on whether or not he is in the right job, I do disagree with them though. I think you need a very hard minded person to be able to cope with that type of work, somebody too sympathetic would struggle to deal with a multiple rta or taking a severley injured or traumatised person from their family etc.. Just my views but I would rather have the person who is focused on the job doing it than someone who is going to get overinvolved with patients and end up depressed and suicidal themselves. Its got to be very hard work at times, and maybe over time people who do it do become less sympathetic. But the thread isnt about this, its about how she can help her friend, I think she can help her and hopefully all will be fine in time.
