I'm reading a book, Project Hail Mary, by the bloke that wrote The Martian. Anyway, it's fiction, but it's about a future scenario where something in space starts leeching the energy from the sun. Humanity mobilises to try and sort it out and one of the first things they do is exactly this. Turn the desert into a solar farm. Humanity only mobilises in fiction though.
