what particular golden era are you talking about here - the 1960's, 70's, 80's, 90's or current era ? Or when we qualified regularly for europe........with one of the best teams in the country and bought top quality footballers and filled the stadium every week. I assume it's all about saving costs because he's out of contract. Wouldn't be surprised if we don't sign a replacement at all, but promote someone from the reserves.

He's the only coach left pulling a wage. Everyone else has pissed off. What's scary is if the sale doesn't go through, how many players do you need to officially be able to field a team in the Championship? I'm considering putting a tenner on Butt as player/manager. Then he can sack Hughton and Calderwood and save a bit more money.

This for me. I'm at the stage of 'Anyone But Ashley'. At least Shepherd will have a crack at rebuilding the club, Ashley will sell what isn't nailed down and let the rest fall in. People need to wake the fuck up, FS tried to compete at the highest level and took the risks that go with that. He made some blunders of course he did, but he was also unlucky with for instance the inj ot Luque etc...He might be a monster, but he's our monster. Given the choice between an ambitious spendthrift who'll ruin the club and a miserly incompetent buffoon who'll ruin the club, I choose Shepherd every time. To be fair, he'd be a pretty good chairman if he left the choice of manager, the finances and the PR to someone else. The last bits daft though (as I suspect it was meant to be) because his biggest fault is his desire to be so hands on. Aye it was tongue in cheek. I don't rate Shepherd at all or trust him. But better him than Ashley is where I'm at now.

Did we ever adequately replace Freddy Fletcher? The man struck me as a complete shit of a human being, but he seemed to know how to run a football club. Kicking out the feckless casino manager and installing an experienced heavyweight football club executive/administrator would be a good start (and I'm not thinking of Shepherd here). We also need a football director with the stature, knowledge and experience of a Bobby Robson or a Bobby Charlton imo. Plus a decent lawyer who knows their way round players' contracts. Fuck it, let's just start from scratch.
