Smith was good for about 4 or 5 games but Nolan and Shola's early goals kicked us on IMO. Once Guthrie got in the central midfield as well, he was mint (easy enough when you've got a few seconds to pick a pass out every time you get the ball like) and Carroll and Lovenkrands powered us through the spring. Crediting Smith with a decent hand in galvanising the dressing room seems fair if you read the articles from the time and since but on the pitch, he was fairly inconsequential.
