It was shortly after being offered a new contract complete with pay cut iirc, with Nolan being treated equally poorly and effectively forced to leave. We were all fucked off with it and so was he. I have to reject that he forced a move though. He hinted at digging his heels in and sitting his deal out, not the actions of a man that had been proactively trying to force a move.
-
He rejected a new contract offer before the Twitter ramblings though didn't he? So it can't have been that untenable.
-
What were the papers saying like? Because I seem to remember him absolutely slamming the Nolan sale then leaving shortly after
-
The 'bad influence' at the time was down to speaking out against the hierarchy though, wasn't it? Something most can't hold against him.
-
Was it the centre of your chest Parky?

I'm sure I read that he was a leading figure in the whole "if you don't want to be here, fuck off" movement after we went down. I think there was plenty being reported in the media at the time to suggest that he was a leading influence in the dressing room as well.
-
Through injury, he was still a big personality in that squad though. More cliquey than Toontastic
-
I think the way he's spoken out against the way the club is run has increased his popularity for sure, as well as how much he winds other club's fans up. It's not that odd.

The club behaved appallingly that summer, especially with Nolan. He was an immensely popular captain and I don't think Barton did much wrong. He could have stayed for the last year of his deal and probably be released or insulted by the terms of a new deal (like Nolan was) The fact that he'd have been a year older the following summer coupled with his reputation etc he'd have been taking a huge risk staying here given the deal QPR were offering.

What's your point?

Think he's redeemed himself since then, I find it hard to dislike anybody that was part of our promotion season - loved that team.

Didn't he say something the other day along the lines of how it's not necessarily about winning, more about getting the three points -

Think we'll get beat. Haven't watched Palace since he took over but the only tactic that seemed to work for him here was against teams attacked us and we contained/hit on break. Carver's desire to play a more entertaining brand of football might play into Pardew's hands, and I doubt he has the nous to avoid or counteract that -
