Can't really argue with that one to be honest. We'd all accepted that his time was coming to an end and most expected a natural handover to Shearer at the end of the 04/05 season. IIRC that whole month of August 2004 was an unmitigated disaster. We sold Speed without SBR knowing, then he found out that he was going to be replaced at the end of the season through the press. Then we sold Woodgate with no viable replacement lined up, the we had the incident where Dyer threw the armband away at Middlesbrough, then the ridiculous bid for Rooney. And then we sacked Robson - 36 hours before the transfer window closed. Utter madness. not me. i never thought he should have been sacked. i thought at the time that we were had been spoiled by the success we had under him and the majority on here assumed dark times like we're in now were not possible again. problem is the grass isn't always greener. we had one of the most revered managers in the game at the time and we didn't treat him with the respect he deserved. of course the whole situation was made much worse by several baffling decisions by shepherd - timings of sackings, appointing the likes of souness and roeder etc but if you ask me the problem with the kind of success we enjoyed under robson is that it breeds impatience among fans (and in our case, the board). it may be some time again until we're finishing in and around the top 4 for three consecuitve seasons. i wonder if we'll be as fickle next time....assuming there is a next time

robson never should have been sacked. we've been on a downward spiral ever since
-
i've got a mate that's die hard west ham who reckons harewood will do a great job in this division. sign him up
-
that's not far away. i'd probably put given in for van der saar and maybe terry for vidic. otherwise spot on. that team would walk the title tbh
-
the prospect of meeting people i talk to on the net but have never met scares me. sorry lads. sure you're all dying to meet me and that
-
barton he might have looked half decent at citeh but when has he ever done it in a newcastle shirt? plus he's always likely to get himself sent off. i'd bench him unless we've got injuries

Peterborough United 2-0 Newcastle United (League Cup R3)

tbh, i'd rather we lost this and kept our first team squad intact than risk injuries to key players when the league is the most important thing. we can afford to take this competition seriously when we're in the top flight but it's all about promotion at all costs this year. put out all the kids -
don't really care that much about the number 9 either. ideally, it is worn by a top class centre forward but when are we realistically going to attract one of those again? i'd be happy for shola or another new forward to take it. we've had some great number 9s down the years but it's not like we need to retire the number or anything

gates - we can still pack in the credulous............

Amazing turnouts so far. I'd wager though that part of it is down to the good start and that our hardcore is about 36k. If we were losing it would probably be closer to that level -
Smith and guthrie all the way. Barton has been nothing but total pants since he signed for us. Agree about the need for a winger - jonas aside, we've no natural wide men.
-
shame that such as decent player is such an odious little shit
-
we don't really have a big enough (or good enough) squad to rest and rotate players do we? the best 11 has to play every week, often twice a week. the fixtures come thick and fast in this division
-
Butt geremi and Barton have all looked average at best this season. Guthrie, smith and Nolan look decent at this level. They should be our first choice cms. A new winger or two wouldn't hurt. We don't really have any natural wide men other than jonas and he's out injured
-
It wasn't the numbers that lost it tonight, it was a poor midfield. Butt and Barton have the quality to dominate a midfield - they just failed to do it tonight. kind of supports my point doesn't it. we need better quality and depth of squad than those two. likewise up front. ranger, carrol, lovenkrands, ameobi - not really good enough if shola gets injured is it
-
goes to show how much the squad needs extra numbers. the warning signs were there on sunday against cardiff
-
means we stay third behind boro and west brom
-
for fuck's sake. i saw this one coming actually. wonder what accadacca is making of it
-
i suspected midweek trips to the likes of blackpool could be where we tripped up
-
i doubt ashley will sanction more loan signings unless they really are emergencies. why increase the wage bill when we're top of the league and unbeaten? he'll want to do it on as much as a shoe string as possible.

smith has played centre mid, right mid and up front. he's looked very poor up until this season and still hasn't scored a goal for us. that said, on this season's evidence he is good enough at this level.

Come on Alex , You can do better than this. are you saying smith wasn't total garbage for us in the premier league? i'm struggling to think of one decent game smith had for us before we were relegated. he was a liability for us in the top flight, especially when played in midfield. good to see he's found his level mind. Someone can check the stats but didnt he only play 3 or 4 games for us last season ffs. Bearing in mind his injuries, the distraction at the club, his lack of games and his change in role, i think everyone is being unfair on the lad. Has he not reinvented himself into a David Batty. I also love the way all those who moan about some of us having blind optimism about our promotion chances are the very ones who have blind optimism about how well Jonas is going to do........ smith has been absolute crap up for us up until this season. i'm not defending jonas either btw Checked the stats and he played 4 games for us last season, 2 as a sub. why ignore his games prior to last season?
-
lua lua left mid based on what exactly? a handful of games coming off the bench? shola has to start if fit.
-
all of them.
