I have a lot of respect for Monbiot and that piece is a strong one iyam.

My older relatives are much the same. Defies belief.

Why would anyone pay £250m or whatever Ashley is charging, for a club worth about £100m? The only thing I can think of is that money is either no object, or they've looked at it and thought they can realise that money back again. If it's the latter, we'll probably have more years of 'sustainability' ahead of us, and frankly, I'd rather have Ashley for that. At least he might be learning from his mistakes.
-
If only someone more reputable was saying it. It'd be great if Qatar picked us up or something like that but being realistic, it's not going to happen while Ashley is still owed a debt mountain.
-
I don't think Huddersfield will go up in the playoffs but I could see either Sheff Wed or Fulham. Fulham probably the best team left, although S.Wed are in form.
-
You're missing out then
-
Aye, I guess you're right about their fans, it's not their fault. The board deserve it though.

Yeah if we keep Benitez his style of play should be perfect for next season as well. I think we'll have a good season if we can just manage to get a few players over the line.

As an aside to this, Wigan and Blackburn currently looking like going down but with a chance of swapping with Birmingham. I'm finding it really hard to determine a preference amongst these teams. I think, just, that I'd prefer it to be the two currently in position to go. But at the same time, Birmingham pretty much deserve it.

If you took patriotism out of it, I wonder what the landscape would look like. I'm just struggling to think of any actual positives the Tories are even offering these people, and maybe that's literally the only one.

What good is a self sufficient football club to Ashley though? What would the point be? We became sustainable, finally, and then got relegated. Undoing many of the benefits of the sustainability. He'd be far better off aiming to get us to middle table looking upwards, with no chance of relegation. The only way that happens, is with continued and sustained investment in order to remain competitive.

Has Essembee said anything about our promotion? Or has it all been commentary on Sunderland
-
Well aye, but you could have argued the same point when we finished 5th under Pardew, and they took it as a sign that they didn't need to do anything for a couple of years.

But surely then that'd be tantamount to accepting that we're just going to go straight back down again? As a business decision, they need to ensure we stay up. I suppose the reality though, is that they know they won't be able to hold on to Rafa long term, and investing in playing staff for some sort of surge up the league to actually be in contention isn't something they consider to be important. While I've no doubt that Rafa could make their money work harder (in terms of getting the best out of players), they'll also know that he won't stay unless they genuinely want to kick on. So I suspect that Ashley and Charnley already know what the outcome is going to be. If we start hearing rumours of other managers being linked with us, we should perhaps assume he's off.

I remain fascinated that all these people are genuinely convinced that the Tories have their best interests at heart. I could understand if they were swinging to the Liberals, but the Tories?

To be fair to Ashley, he has actually stumped up for the past two seasons (albeit not his own money, but a reasonable indication that we should have funds available if the club has generated them itself). The gamble in January was tedious but if he and Rafa can come to an agreement now, it could actually pay off in the long run. If we'd forked out £15-20m then it could have been on subpar players. If we do it now, at least they'll be players fit for the PL. All of this said, I'm mindful of Charnley's statement on the accounts a few weeks back. That didn't sound encouraging.

Don't think you understand the point of this thread mate. It's not about Dummett, it's about Fish.
-
Aye it's a strange one actually. Granted Huddersfield falling away helped but we wobbled through the same period so it's not like we were lucky as such. Or rather, had they beaten us in the end, they would have been just as lucky by the same measure.

Some if the threads over there "I hate them more than anything else in the world" Can you imagine hating a football team that much? It's gonna be brutal on there when they go down...

Well that whole sorry episode is consigned to history now. Fuck the Championship, Fuck everyone in it. Back to the PL thank fuck. Well done to Rafa.
