  1. Discussing the cache of liking a band that split up 40 years ago. If you have anything to add to the debate, you aren't "cool"
  2. There's not many people said they hate The Beatles though. One I think. Renton's view is extreme in my opinion. As much as i love them, and have put them on a pedestal in the past, I eventually grew out of them and realised (in the words of John Lennon) they were "just a band". As someone who bought the entire back catalogue, live at the BBC, Red, Blue, Past Masters vol 1, Past Masters vol 2, The Anthology volumes 1 to 3 on CD, The Anthology DVD box set, Let it Be Naked...and Love...there comes a point (it was a long time coming) when you have to say enough, it's as ungainly as the Tupac Shakur dynasty trying to pick the pockets of anyone daft enought to invest in anything but the original albums by releasing diminishing quality music that people hail as genius rather than the binned sub-par sketches they really are. A BBC season to coincide with their new £99 video game and digital versions of their entire back catalogue leaves a sour taste with me too. Should have been QVC hawking this stuff. I don't think it's extreme to think they have a special place in UK musical history, which is all I've said, really. What's more extreme is you buying all that stuff, which I certainly haven't. And again that kind of prove my point about their special place. You went further than that like... "one of the first bands to actually write and play their own music" "Without them the music today would simply be unrecognisable" The first point, is that not true, genuine question? Whey Bill Haley & the Comets were doing that over a decade earlier.

  5. Phoney beatlemania has bitten the dust tbh
  6. I wouldn't argue that anyone's been more influential, but David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, The Clash/Sex Pistols, The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd have all been as influetial. I would rather listen to all of those in preference to the Beatles (except The Stones) but disagree they have been as influential. The Beatles are their Daddy, the common root. Interestingly enough I'm just listening to covers of Bowie and Pink Floyd songs by Camille O'Sullivan as I type. She is one hot chick, but I digress. I think the Beatles pioneered the album as opposed to the single....mainly because they became a studio band rather than a live band. Other than that, there's not really much you could say they pioneered....other than manufactured hysteria courtesy of Brian Epstein. They did some messing with four tracks and found sounds...but i think that was inspired by others. What would you give them credit for? A specific technique in the evolution of music, anything comparable to Hendrix's feedback or Van Halens tapping. Interesting that you think a studio band would produce singles as opposed to albums, I would have thought the opposite would be true. I'd agree the Beatles never had any 'concept' albums mind. I'm not a musician HF or even much of a music head so I can't give you specifics on any musical techniques they may have devloped. But for me personally what makes them stand out is their melodies, and how prolific they were. Also remember the time frame here, they were one of the first bands to actually write and play their own music. That's a massive step which simple can't be over emphasised. Then there's their cultural impact, which was massive, and the fact we're having this discussion now proves it. No other band comes close. What do you think the reason is for them being overrated? Because it's received wisdom that "no other band comes close". When the bands I named above are just the ones from British Rock history who I think have been AS influetial musically, if not culturally. I'll agree, The Beatles cultural significance is not overrated. Musically, nobody could live up to that level of hype.

Like Stravinsky's Firebird and compositions by The Dave Brubeck Quartet? [/Wiki warrior]
  9. Can i just add..I LOVE the Beatles. Always have. Always will.

  11. So no one here can judge the impact of Shakespeare, Newton or Mozart?

  13. Take That's later period has been far more interesting too.
  14. Some good bits. Too many people getting camera time for me though. Felt like I was watching the Really Wild Show again. Which wouldn't have been a bad thing if Michaella Strachan was involved.
  15. You might not like them but to claim they are somehow overrated is ridiculous. It's the one thing you can say categorically. For example, Q reviewed their back catalogue when it came out on CD and gave EVERY one of them 5 stars.
  16. http://listen.grooveshark.com Spotify has 3.8m songs Grooveshark has 22m Anyone know the catch? Why's Spotify more popular? Cheers
  17. Speech Debelle Miss Dynamite teee hee mk 2 I think I'm more interested in who comes at the top end of the rateyourmusic charts these days.
  18. Nail on the head line in bold. Based on this post I've told the others that I don't think I can mod / admin this place any more. Whether that is a permanent or a temporary thing remains to be seen but tbh I need some time away from here anyway. Adios. Seriously? No I'm taking the piss..... Course I'm fucking serious you tit! More important things in life than dealing with shit like this tbh. Certain responses suggest I've made the right choice to have time-out too.
  19. Stevie has dabs on it. He gets my vote. Let the postcode lottery begin.
  20. Put Band of Brothers in my bag to start this morning, but listened to the Adam and Joe Podcast on the way in instead. Put In Cold Blood in my bag to start yesterday, but listened to the Frank Skinner Podcast on the way in instead. I'll start something soon.
  21. The Govt in the U.S. hasn't changed since Kennedy died. More or less the same people and interest groups get in every time, Obama included. I don't really think that's true in foreign policy / international diplomacy terms. I don't think you'd have had someone like Clinton (who I'm not saying is a saint by any means) would have launched into rhetoric like 'you're either with us or you're against us' or indeed would have invaded Iraq on such a dodgy premise. It's simply not true on any level. Just another Parkyism. The media that's supposed to represent the people and keep the government honest is too tied up as part of conglomerates to have it any other way. As was pointed out again today... Liberal views (proven correct repeatedly) are still restricted to the blogosphere....and HBO.
  22. There's only one way to find out. TOONTASTIC RISK TOURNAMENT!
