And I was just confirming what 2J said. People had heard of Biggie when he died and he was widely regarded as the best. I've never even listened to the bloke so I've got no opinion of how Jay Zed compares. Personally I prefer Chuck D to all of em. The Source was the pre-eminent hip-hop mag for 20+ years...until their feud with Eminem and Fiddy. Perhaps he was heard of if you were into that kind of thing, which at the time, i wasn't. I'd argue that he became largely more popular in death. As did hip-hop.

  8. That's why you should listen to more cerebral rap without the hood or the posturing and the stuff that rips the shit out of those that do "gangsta". Stuff like Buck 65, Bike For Three, Dan Le Sac, The Roots, K'naan, M.I.A. or MF Doom.
  9. Had a pleasant walk along the coast at 6.30am this morning. Was hoping to get more GNR activity, but the tents weren't up to much...

Is he still trying to be Notorious B.I.G? No, because people have heard of him whilst he's still alive. Pretty sure by the time Biggie died he was arguably the biggest name in hip-hop like. That and Jay-Z could never release an album anywhere near as good as Ready 2 Die. By the end of the year, Wallace was the top-selling male solo artist and rapper on the U.S. pop and R&B charts. In July 1995, he appeared on the cover of The Source with the caption "The King of New York Takes Over". At the Source Awards, he was named Best New Artist (Solo), Lyricist of the Year, Live Performer of the Year, and his debut Album of the Year. At the Billboard Awards, he was Rap Artist of the Year.

Thought so after the first listen too. More down to the production (what's the string sample?) and Alicia Keys like.

  16. Going on experience, my future self thinks my current self is a fucking idiot. He wouldn't be interested in a thing the naive pup has to say.
