La la land looked like my bag from the minute I saw the trailer (I love Amelie and Moulin Rouge and Cabaret and plenty of wifey films that are well done) and the critical response has only lifted expectations since then. People saying it's the best war film since Saving Private Ryan, I think it's better. SPR had a brilliant visceral, unflinching opening and then turned into a glossy traditional Hollywood war film with the usual archetypes and rescue mission type fare. It made for a weird experience where it overwhelmed to start with and underwhelmed the longer it went on. HR switches that, and I imagine doing that reflects better the experiences of volunteers.
