Exactly what I said to CT in the mackem thread. Whether anyone thinks we should have gone at them from the start, or that Pardew was spot on to try an nick it in the last 20 minutes (and he was), what was also clear is that whenever we scored first, they had class on the bench themselves to bring on and force the issue. We scored on 71, Cardozo came on on 72. Moreno on 76. Both scorers in the first leg. It was only a run out for them until it got serious...and it could have got serious a lot sooner if they wanted.

The tactics were almost perfect. Do you not watch any horse racing ct? Good Jockeys know how much power they're sitting on and they hold the horse back for most of the race. Then on the final furlongs they whip the shit out of them and chase for the line. We were sat at the back of the field last night for most of the time but always had that burst in our back pocket. When we started using the whip we fell just short of a photo finish. My point in this analogy is you would have flogged your horse to within an inch of it's life before you were half way round the course. They would have went sailing past in the later stages, even if we scored 3 in the first half (unlikely). Your options from the bench to keep up the momentum would have been the lacklustre ones that started.... But at a time Benfica were chasing, rather than sat on a lead.

Aye. It's not somewhere I'd go regularly. The name harks back to an era 20 years back and there isn't a picture or a shirt on the walls older than 5 years...but if you've arrived 20 minutes early or whatever and fancy a swift drink compared to drinking inside the stadium it's like the ritz.
