New York, New York Scorsese's 'musical' flopped at the box office and is probably most famous for the song. I guess in a decade of gritty realism like Taxi Driver and Chinatown, when escapism came from the likes of Alien and Star Wars, harking back two decades to fake looking singalongs with little in terms of modern specatcle was never going to go down very well. It's by no means Scorsese and De Niro's best pairing, but I thought it nipped along nicely (even the extended version). There's an odd moment of excellence that really makes it worthwhile, like the moment De Niro fights being thrown out of a club through a corridor of bright bulbs being smashed as he goes.

I wouldn't say I ruined them by wathching them too much, but in the same way there's music I used to love, which I've grown out of, I have films I can barely stand now that I absoloutley loved at the time. Parky mentioned one, Leon. Another will be seen as sacrilege, but Shawshank is sappy enough to make me sick and that last scene in particular ruins the fucker. I also loathe Forrest Gump now. Every time I catch a glimpse of the simpleton achieving another inspirational feat I want to stab a dagger in my temple, how was I taken in by the shite in the first place?

Shrek The Third Feared the worst after the first ten minutes, but it turned out to be quite enjoyable. Certainly as good as the second one. Syndromes and a Century I don't think I've ever been so bored. The fumes going up the extractor was lush, but there's no narrative whatsoever. Just a selection of scenes, some repeated almost word for word in the second half. I got it as Sight and Sound loved it (review) and it was nominated for the Golden Lion, perhaps I'm a bit slow and it was way over my head, if anyone else can confirm it's a case of emperors new clothes I'd be grateful.
