4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days I can't get away with these grim European films that people at Cannes seem to love like The Death of Mr. Lazarescu or anything by the Dardennes. This has to be the grimmest of the lot. A single camera, with few cuts, this is another handheld slog of a film about misery. Those that can last the first half hour as a student goes about her business of getting ready and borrowing money for something or other, are slightly rewarded by some really tense and well acted scenes once you arrive at the crux of the film (the aforementioned students friend is having a very late, very illegal abortion, hence the title). But this has got a near perfect score on Metacritic after 37 reviews, I can't fathom it being viewed as the best film of the year by such a margin.

That's the trouble with stuff like this though, isn't it? You can actually have a canny concept but as soon as it is reasonably successful it has to be repeated. Again and again with bigger twats every time so as to keep people interested. Even Big Brother was a good idea initially imo. Not sure you could find bigger twats than Paul and Saira (or whatever she was called) from series one.
