In German, the equivalent of "...and they lived happily ever after" at the end of a fairytale translates as "...and if they haven't died, they're still alive today".

This is my recollection of events, yes. 👑 I was back in Mainz on Friday and they've even opened a handy shop in my honour now (or is it a randy shop? )

That's one of the issues, 11,000 means the arena too small compared with most recent venues really. By the time you've installed the stage, the green room for 25+ delegations and all, you're looking at a capacity of maybe 6,000. If it was one of the few suitable places in a country like Israel or Serbia or wherever then it might still get the nod, but it's not like the UK has a shortage of venues in bigger cities with 3-5k more seats.

At the risk of being a killjoy, there are nerdy technical/infrastructural reasons why I suspect it's a non-starter, but I dig the ambition and obviously I'd love it to happen

We'd literally just decided that it's finally time to leave London because our already extortionate rent is increasing in line with current inflation next month (and even then, the increase is only so "low" out of appreciation for us being good tenants - cheers like, greatly obliged ) but the latest energy cost news has given us a much needed extra shove to do it sooner rather than later. In this landscape we need the security of owning and we need much lower outgoings, because there's less and less of a security buffer there. And I'm saying that from the perspective of a two-salary household with no kids, pets, cars etc. Like you, I've no idea how people without that safety net will cope. I mean, I do - they won't. It could be grim as fuck.

I'm going to the theatre tonight. I hate people who surreptitiously (or not so surreptitiously) check their phone during a performance - but if anything was going to make me renege on that policy...

Finally did this trip last weekend, at the fourth time of asking. Felt like a free hit given the travel and accommodation were paid for in early 2020, which isn't a bad thing considering the Dutch coast isn't the cheapest of places (especially now), but the cycling was good, the beaches are lush and the weather was spot on - plenty of direct sunshine but never got properly above 20 degrees, which suits me fine. Some decent sunsets too...
