I suppose the Maddie jokes would be different if we knew exactly what had happened to her and it was as graphic and gruesome as the Baby P case. The blank space left by her disappearance, even though she's probably been treated just as horrifically, gives a bit of distance humour-wise I guess.

There's certainly some truth in that in terms of the current financial situation. By far the best course of action would be to let the crisis accelerate, go through the worst of it as quickly as possible and come out the other side sooner rather than later - but that would put the next general election right in the middle of the trough, so instead we get these desperate attempts to keep things (more or less) afloat for another year or two, which is only going to make things even worse when the shit really hits the fan in the near future. Bah.

Unless you work for the BBC, obviously.

True - I do know some British ex-pats in Spain who have integrated impeccably (if speaking near-fluent Spanish and working in a local hair salon counts for anything). They themselves would be the first to admit that they're exceptions in what's now a 750k-strong ex-pat population over there, though.
