So there'll be no buyers for the entire Chinese economy as soon as "The West incl. Japan and Anzac" goes tits-up, either directly or indirectly (since China's markets in Africa and beyond wouldn't survive a moment without our involvement). That would be interesting. And I'd wager we'd come out of it better than "they" would, if only we could make the case for accepting 50 years of destitution and rat-eating for a subsequent 500 years of superiority like in the Good Old Days.

Another one for the list if you're in Soho - in my very humble one, at least - is the Crown & Two Chairmen on Dean Street. Extensive range of draught beers if you're into your wanky German/Belgian shit etc., decent atmosphere downstairs and a quieter room upstairs.

Spectacularly specific, but the Old Bridge Inn in Ripponden, West Yorkshire, is lovely - the very epitome of an English country pub in a picturesque location. Cracking beer selection too.

I reckon the Kermode/Mayo show last week (which Lawson was also on) got it pretty much spot on - Crowe's enough of a pro to know that he failed in nailing any kind of plausible and consistent accent, but vain enough to have nothing in his defence beyond getting pissy about it.

Not pleasant. That's the Newham that went 100% Labour at the council elections, too - having grown up in Newcastle, I'm always amazed by authorities that elect their councillors in one go every four years, as opposed to the rotational system we have. Anyway, not relevant to the point at hand, which is glad he's OK.

They campaigned on electoral fairness though didn't they, and this could hardly be further from that. I am honestly disappointed by their 'cynicism', I had thought they might represent something better than this . Glad the truth is out in the open now though, they'll get little sympathy from me and millions of others at the next election. Oh definitely, I expect a wipeout. But that would have happened whether they'd gone blue, red or non-committal. If all else is lost, you might as well get a few years of sweet, sweet power in the process.
